Rahm won this event in 2018 at +1000, but otherwise it’s been some big underdogs who have cashed which is a reflection of the easier course layout. Swafford was +20000 last year and Adam Long was a huge stretch in his 2019 victory at +60000.

It may be back to chalk for the 2023 American Express winner, as world #2 Scottie Scheffler has finished in the top 10 in four straight events.

This was the first tournament Scheffler played last season (T25) and he followed that up with a 20th before the win at the WM Phoenix Open.

So far, his timeline has moved up a bit this year after getting a T8 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions two weeks ago so look out here.

It’s hard to win in the PGA any week, let alone back-to-back tournaments which is what Si Woo Kim will try following his Sony Open victory last Sunday. That’s a pretty solid showing considering it was his first event since the Houston Open last November.

Kim won at PGA West in 2021 and had a decent 11th place finish last year so he likes the course. So far, nine golfers have won this event twice so it plays for repeats, and Kim has a great chance to add his name to the 2X victors list.

Adam Hadwin is tied with Si Woo Kim for most shots gained at this event for this field. That means a solid course familiarity as he got especially hot from 2016-2019 with four straight top six finishes.

Also, the last two years have trailed off a bit (25th, 32nd) but there’s a solid past here. Without doubt, Hadwin is a solid free pick this week for the 2023 The American Express title.
