5 important trends for Kentucky Downs
Kentucky Downs will host its annual six-day meet starting Sept. 5.
During the 2020 Kentucky Downs meet, 24 races were contested at 6 1/2 furlongs. Only 21% of the races won by a gate-to-wire leader. Horses with the Brisnet E (early) running style won 25% and those with P (presser) or S (sustain or closer) won 29%.
Fast times were commonplace during the 2020 Kentucky Downs meet. Course records were broken and re-broken. New standards were established for five of Kentucky Down’s seven distances.
Mike Maker has been the top trainer at Kentucky Downs since 2016. He has 37 wins, but his win percentage is just 16%. Shug McGaughey has five wins and Larry Rivelli has four wins.
Jose Ortiz has won 30 races at Kentucky Downs since 2016. Tyler Gaffalione won 11 races from 45 starts in 2020. Betting all of his mounts equally would have produced a 31% profit.
Wesley Ward has nine wins from 20 starts with experienced juveniles since 2016. Ward's debut juveniles have only one win from 11 starts during the same period.
