6 takeaways from the weekend in college football

The college football season is one month old. Week 4 saw several upsets, including Kansas State over Oklahoma, Texas A&M over Arkansas, and Texas Tech over Texas.

BYU beat Wyoming to bounce back from the loss to Oregon. The team is flawed, but has potential. Jaren Hall is an elite quarterback. They play Utah State on Thursday night.

Cincinnati and UCF are both 3-1, while Houston is 2-2.

Kalani Sitake's team is in good shape this season, but they need to win more games to have a chance of a NY6 bowl game. If they lose to Notre Dame and Arkansas, they will be eliminated from the race.

Utah beat Arizona State on the road. The Utes are 3-1 on their season. They play four games against teams with a combined record of 14-2. Their next two games are against Oregon State and USC. If they win all four, they will be the favorite to win the Pac-12 title. If the team loses all the games, it will have a disappointing season and be out of the CFP.

Utah State lost to UNLV by 10 points. The Aggies are 1-3 in the season. They have games remaining against BYU, Air Force, Colorado State, Wyoming, New Mexico, Hawaii, San Jose State and Boise State. If they want to become bowl eligible, they need to beat four of their last six opponents.

Georgia is the current favorite to win the College Football Playoff. Alabama and Ohio State are not considered contenders. Michigan, Clemson, USC, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, NC State and that is just the beginning of the list.  Any undefeated or one-loss Power Five program remains a threat to make the CFP. The teams in that group don't seem destined to do so over one another.

The current AP poll is the most recent one. Rankings should be released after Week 5 or later. Preseason polls are a long-standing part of college football.

There are 15 undefeated Power Five schools in the rankings. Kentucky and Tennessee should be ranked No. 7 and No 8. Minnesota and Florida State should also be in that group. Michigan is ranked 4th, while Kansas is unranked.

Kentucky is ranked 14 spots ahead of Minnesota. Kentucky has beaten one Power Five team, Florida (2-2), two Group of Five teams and an FCS team. Minnesota has defeated two Power 5 teams (Colorado and Michigan State) and two G5 teams. Michigan has one win over a Power five team this year, against Maryland. Kansas has won over West Virginia, Duke and Houston. Florida State has wins over LSU, Louisville and Boston College. Tennessee has beat Florida and Pitt.

The 2022 Weber State Wildcats are off to one of the best starts in program history. They are 4-0 to start the season. The team is ranked No. 7 in the country and has won 21 of its last 23 road games. Weber is playing Eastern Washington on Oct. 8, Montana State on October 22, Montana on 29, and Sacramento State in November.
