Event Preview

The Yas Links course in the United Arab Emirates hosts the first European Tour event of 2023 this weekend. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship has been staged since 2006 and is one of just three events on tour held in the Arabian Peninsula. It is played over 7,425 yards, and the tournament record is held by Martin Kaymer, who finished at -24 in 2011.

The defending champion coming into the event this weekend is Thomas Pieters. The Belgium star finished a shot clear of Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Shubhankar Sharma to win the event last year. However, a number of previous champions make extremely compelling cases this weekend.

Tommy Fleetwood has won this event on two previous occasions, with his latest win coming back in 2018. However, he also finished in a tie for second in 2020, as he finished two shots off Lee Westwood. Tyrrell Hatton joins Fleetwood at the top of the betting, as the Englishman won by a four-shot margin when claiming victory in 2021.

This year will be a big one for Hatton, and I think that he has an excellent chance of finally winning a major. Robert MacIntyre would be a player worth second consideration, as he has an excellent short game, which could be key this weekend. Richard Mansell could also be a standout star at a bigger price after enjoying a fine end to 2022.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship Prediction

I think Shane Lowry is a world-class star, and this weekend could be perfectly suited to his game. Lowry finished in a tie for 23 at The CJ Cup on his previous outing on the PGA Tour, and he could get his season off to a flyer in the UAE this weekend.
