Do Zips Hold MACtion Underdog Value?

Akron (6-3) is priced as a huge underdog against Miami Ohio (7-2) in the first MACtion game of Wednesday evening. The Zips are coming off a momentum-building win over Kent State in which they scored 21 unanswered points to win 31-27, snapping a six-game losing streak.

The Zips will try to play spoiler to a RedHawks team that is favored to win the MAC East division after beating Ohio 30-16 on the road last weekend. The RedHawks were actually 7.5-point underdogs in that game after losing their starting quarterback Brett Gabbert to a season-ending leg injury.

This is a clear mismatch no matter how you look at it, but we wouldn’t completely discount the Zips in this spot. Four of their seven losses this season have come by one score, and they have some confidence coming off their best showing of the season.

Ultimately, the sharp money is clearly on the “under” in this game, with the total dropping all the way from 44 to 40.5 at Pinnacle. We still feel there is some value left, as the Zips’ defense has shown improvement, while the Miami OH offense is taking a step back due to Gabbert’s injury.

These two teams have a tendency to play lower-scoring contests, with the “under” cashing in 11 of the past 15 meetings. With 13.9 mph wind in the forecast and a near-50% chance of rain, bet this trend to continue Wednesday.

  • Akron vs Miami OH Prediction: Under 40.5 Points (-112)

Bowling Green vs Kent State Odds

Falcons Will Soar Against Struggling Flashes

The next game up on the Wednesday MACtion slate is one that actually has the tightest spread of the three games. Bowling Green (5-4) is a 10-point road favorite against Kent State (1-8) at Dix Stadium.

The Golden Flashes are reeling right now after blowing a 17-point lead to Akron last weekend to extend their losing streak to six games. They’ll have a hard time turning things around against a Falcons team that has won three straight, including a victory over Ball State in Week 10.

The Falcons are the superior team in almost every facet, ranking No. 2 in the MAC in total defense (325 YPG) and racking up 21 sacks. Offensively, they have a dominant rush game that will exploit a Kent State defense allowing 33 points per contest.

The Golden Flashes do have a talented sophomore wide receiver in Chrishon McCray, who went off for 161 yards in the previous game. We do think this Kent State offense will put up points against a Bowling Green defense that is allowing opponents to convert 49.3% of third-down chances in MAC games.

While we lean toward the “over” on the game total, we can’t quite get there with rain in the forecast. Our best bet is going to be the Falcons team total of 26.5 points, as the Golden Flashes have shown no ability to stop even remotely competent offensive attacks.

  • Bowling Green vs Kent State Pick: Bowling Green Team Total Over 26.5 (-110)

Eastern Michigan vs Toledo Odds

Rockets’ Offense is Near Unstoppable

The last MACtion game of the night pits Eastern Michigan (4-5) against Toledo (8-1) at the Glass Bowl Stadium. This is the largest spread of the night, with the Rockets favored by 19 points over the Eagles.

The Rockets’ offense is near unstoppable, averaging 34.9 points per game, which has helped propel them to nine straight victories. Leading that attack is junior QB Dequan Finn, who has completed 131 of 207 passes (63.3%) for 1,601 yards and 15 touchdowns with six interceptions.
