AL East Odds Update: Orioles Bet Down, Rays Dropping

After overtaking the Tampa Bay Rays as the odds-on favorite to win the AL East last week, the Baltimore Orioles have doubled down and risen once again.

Baltimore Orioles -260 (Last week: -155)

The oddsmakers’ disrespect of the Baltimore Orioles was real to begin the regular season, but the O’s have forced that to change with the results they’ve continued to display. Baltimore continues to sit on top of the AL East, even though they’re in the middle of two straight losses and a 5-5 record over their last ten games. Baltimore has seen a lot of positive development from their young group, and that’s been a big reason why they’ve continued to see their odds of winning the AL East bet down from -155 to -260

Tampa Bay Rays +230 (Last week: +165)

With one of the strongest starts to a regular season in recent memory, the Tampa Bay Rays were at one time a major favorite to win the AL East. Over the last month, though, those odds have trailed off with their poor play. The Rays have dealt with multiple injuries in their rotation, with Shane McClanahan being the latest add onto the shelf as it was announced the talented lefty would have Tommy Johny surgery and miss the next year of action. That’s a big blow to the Rays’ odds of winning the AL East this year, but this group is resilient and has a lot of depth at the position. Acquiring Aaron Civale ahead of the trade deadline looks to be a move that can help keep the Rays’ heads above water. Still, Tampa remains just two games back in the AL East, but they’ve seen their odds of being crowned division champs drop from +165 to +230

Toronto Blue Jays +1500 (Last week: +800)

The Toronto Blue Jays have high-end talent but have struggled with consistency. Toronto occupies a wild-card position in the American League but still struggles to produce runs regularly. They’ve been getting some of the best starting pitching in baseball, but their offense is far too inconsistent to be confident in them going on a late-season run to capture the AL East. With the Blue Jays sitting in the bottom third of the MLB in runs scored per game at home, it might just be a good thing they’d be slated to start the postseason on the road. With a middling 5-5 stretch over their last ten games, the Blue Jays’ odds of winning the AL East have nearly doubled from +800 to +1500

Boston Red Sox +13000 (Last week: +25000)

After a mediocre first three months of the regular season, the Boston Red Sox caught fire in July and were considered back in the playoff race. Just when you want to count the Red Sox out of the playoff race, they find a way to gain ground and get back in the mix. Boston trails the Blue Jays by only three games in the American League wild-card race but are still 10.5 games back in the AL East. Still, the Red Sox’s odds of winning the division have nearly been cut in half over the last week from +25000 to +13000

New York Yankees +25000 (Last week: +22000)

The New York Yankees had many problems to start the year. Aaron Judge’s injury really derailed their offense, and even with him back in the fold, this group hasn’t been able to find their footing. The Yankees sit 6.5 games behind the last wild-card spot and are in the basement of the AL East, leading to their odds continuing to plummet to win the division from +22000 to +25000
