Anaheim suffered their fifth straight loss as they were dumped on the road by the Kings in their previous contest Friday night. The Ducks entered Saturday 9-11-0 on the season and stood sixth in the Pacific Division, 12 points behind Vegas for the top spot in the division. They were 10 points behind Vancouver for the final guaranteed spot in the division. Anaheim is 27 in the league in goals per game as they average 2.80 goals per contest. The Ducks are 17 in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 3.25 goals a night. The Ducks are 13 in the league in the penalty killing department as they successfully navigate 80.7% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Los Angeles, Anaheim struggled in their own end of the ice again and that handed them a fifth straight defeat. The Ducks were outshot 13-11 in the opening period and trailed 2-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Anaheim was outshot 13-8 and outscored 2-1 to trail 4-1 at the second intermission. The Ducks spotted the Kings a pair of goals in the opening three minutes of the stanza to trail 4-0 before Radko Gudas got them on the board with his fourth goal of the season at 12:42 off assists from Frank Vatrano and Ryan Strome to narrow the margin to three goals. In the third period, Anaheim held a 12-5 edge in shots with each team scoring once, leaving them well short on the scoreboard. After giving up a goal to trail 5-1, Alex Killorn got the Ducks back within three with his first goal of the year, on the power play, at 11:24 off assists from Mason McTavish and Troy Terry. They could get no closer than that as time expired. John Gibson made 26 saves for the Ducks in the loss, where the shots were even at 31. He is expected to be between the pipes here as well.

Edmonton Oilers Seeking Back-to-Back Wins

Edmonton snapped a three-game slide as they managed to take down the Capitals on the road in their previous contest Friday night. The Oilers improved to 6-12-1 on the season and stand seventh in the Pacific Division, 17 points behind Vegas for the top spot. They were 16 points behind the Canucks for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division. The Oilers are 24 in penalty killing as they successfully get through 76.3% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Washington, Edmonton got their offense going while they were actually good in their own end of the ice for once, helping them snap their slide. The Oilers dominated the opening period, outshooting the Capitals 21-6 and outscoring them 2-0 to lead after 20 minutes of play. Evander Kane opened the scoring with his ninth goal of the season at 14:10 off assists from Leon Draisaitl and Vincent Desharnais. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins made it a 2-0 game with his fourth goal of the year at 15:24 off assists from Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman. Both teams have had their issues this season. The Ducks started strong but limp into this game losers of five straight contests. Edmonton struggled this season, leading to the firing of Jay Woodcroft earlier this year. The Oilers still have their talented duo of McDavid and Draisaitl though their goaltending has been brutal this season. Edmonton has home ice advantage going for them here but the fact remains that they are still next to last in the Pacific Division standings. Anaheim has a good road record on the year (5-3-0) while the Oilers are sub-.500 on home ice (3-4-1) this season, yet Edmonton is heavily favored here. That might be too steep a price: lean toward the Ducks in this one to, at worst, keep this a one-goal game, if not win it outright.

Prediction: Anaheim Ducks +1.5 (-105)

Rating:

Anaheim enters this game having seen the under post an 11-9 mark this season.  The Ducks have an average total of 6.05 goals per game on the season and that number bumps up to 6.62 goals per game at home. Four of Anaheim’s eight road games have stayed under the total on the year. Edmonton enters this game having seen the over go 10-7-2 in their 19 games on the year. The Oilers have an average total of 6.84 goals per game this season though that number drops to six goals per contest on the road this season. Edmonton has seen the over post a 3-3-2 mark in their eight home games this season. Look for this game to wind up falling short of the total for the third straight meeting.

Prediction: Under 6.5
