Edmonton Oilers vs. Calgary Flames Prediction, Preview, and Odds

Free Daily NFL Lock Pick, Saturday January 20th: Green Bay vs San Francisco 8:20pm ET

It’s the latest chapter of the Battle of Alberta as a pair of Pacific Division teams take the ice looking for a win in Cowtown. The Edmonton Oilers are on the road as they make the short trip to face the Calgary Flames Saturday night. Edmonton ran their win streak to an even dozen games as they downed the Kraken 4-2 at home Thursday night in their previous game. Calgary was upended 4-3 on home ice by Toronto in their previous game Thursday night. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Oilers own a 7-3 advantage and have claimed the last three meetings. That includes a 5-2 home win in the first meeting this season on October 29, 2023.

I've hit more than 55 parlays in the last few months, totaling over $67,305 in that span. That includes 24 wins since August 28 totaling $33,759! Looking for my Premium Picks? Don't miss out on another big payday!

Edmonton Oilers Looking for Lucky 13

Edmonton rallied to down Seattle at home to run their win streak to an even dozen games so they look to keep that rolling here. The Oilers improved to 25-15-1 on the season and stand third in the Pacific Division, 13 points behind Vancouver for the top spot. They were one point ahead of the Kings for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division entering Friday night. Edmonton comes into this one 5 in the league in goals per game as they average 3.51 goals per contest. The Oilers stand 12 in goals against as they allow 2.95 goals per night. Edmonton stands 7 in power play success as they cash in 25.8% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Oilers are 10 in penalty killing as they successfully get through 81.8% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Seattle, Edmonton started slow but took control of the game once their offense got going en route to the victory. The Oilers held a 12-10 edge in shots on goal in the opening period but found themselves down 2-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Edmonton held a 13-10 advantage in shots on goal and outscored Seattle 3-0 to take a 3-2 lead at the second intermission. Warren Foegele got the Oilers on the board with his eighth goal of the season at the 37 second mark off assists from Leon Draisaitl and Evander Kane to make it a 2-1 game. Draisaitl tied the game with a power play goal, his 22 of the season, at 4:38 off assists from Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Foegele tallied his second of the night and ninth of the season at 7:38 off assists from Draisaitl and Kane to give the Oilers their first lead of the night. In the third period, Edmonton held an 11-7 advantage in shots and tallied the lone goal of the period to put the game away. Hyman scored on the power play for his 27 goal of the season at 17:22 off assists from Connor McDavid and Draisaitl to close the scoring. Stuart Skinner made 25 saves for Edmonton, who held a 36-27 shot edge, in the victory. He’s likely between the pipes again here.

Calgary Flames Hoping to Snap Edmonton’s Run

Calgary battled but ended up falling a goal short at home against Toronto Thursday night in their previous game. The Flames entered Friday tied for fifth in the Pacific Division with a 21-19-5 record, 17 points behind Vancouver for the top spot in the division race. They were four points behind the Oilers for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division. The team was three points behind the Kings for the second wild card spot. Calgary is 15 in the league in goals for as they put up an average of 3.16 goals per contest. The Flames are tied for 16 in the league in goals against by allowing 3.09 goals a night this season. Calgary is 28 in the league in power play success as they convert 14.1% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Flames are 6 in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 84.1% of their shorthanded situations.

Against Toronto, Calgary started strong but faded after that: their attempts to rally were thwarted by the Maple Leafs and instant replay. The Flames outshot the Maple Leafs 11-7 in the opening period and took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. Yegor Sharangovich opened the scoring with his 19 goal of the year at 10:52 off assists from Rasmus Andersson and Jonathan Huberdeau. Nazem Kadri made it a 2-0 game with his 16 goal of the year, on the power play, at 15:23 off assists from Elias Lindholm and Huberdeau. Calgary gave up a goal late in the period to trim their lead in half. In the second period, Calgary was outshot 16-10 and outscored 3-1 to trail 4-3 at the second intermission. After giving up three straight goals in the period to trail 4-2, Andrew Mangiapane got the Flames within a goal with his ninth goal of the season at 17:53 with assists going to Mikael Backlund and Noah Hanifin. The third period saw Calgary outshot 9-5 with neither side scoring, sending the Flames to defeat. Calgary thought they had tied the game in the period only to have the goal overturned on replay for a hand pass in the offensive zone. Dan Vladar made 28 saves for the Flames, who were outshot 32-26, in the loss. It’s unclear if it will be Vladar or Jacob Markstrom between the pipes for Calgary here.

The Battle of Alberta never disappoints when it comes to bringing entertaining hockey to the ice and this one should be no different. Calgary has gone 7-3-0 in their last 10 games yet have still lost ground to Edmonton, who has won 12 straight games. The Flames are going to be challenged trying to stop the McDavid/Draisaitl combination and they don’t have the offensive firepower to get into a 6-5 type of game with the Oilers. Calgary is shaky about their goaltending situation with Markstrom missing the last two games with a lower-body injury as Vladar has been uninspiring with a 3.35 GAA and an .884 save percentage in his work this season. With the way the Oilers are clicking right now, you have to give them the upper hand in this contest.

Prediction: Edmonton Oilers -146

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

Edmonton enters this game having seen the under go 20-18-3 in their 41 games on the year. The Oilers have an average total of 6.46 goals per game this season though that number slips slightly to 6.43 goals per contest on the road this season. Calgary comes into this contest having seen the over post a 24-19-2 mark in their first 45 games of the season entering Friday night. The Flames have posted an average total of 6.24 goals per game this season, a number that droops down to 5.95 goals per game on home ice. We’ve seen the over post a 6-3-1 mark in the last 10 meetings but Skinner has done a solid job limiting goals against of late: the Oilers haven’t allowed more than two goals in any of their last 10 games. This game ends up under the total as a result.

Prediction: Under 7
