Arsenal to benefit from break

Arsenal have not won in four matches in all competitions, so manager Mikel Arteta will have been relieved to get them back on the training pitch during the January winter break.

Since the 1-1 draw with Liverpool before Christmas, the Gunners have lost three on the spin. West Ham United and Fulham got the better of them in the league before Liverpool won 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the FA Cup.

The demands of playing week in, week out seem to have caught up with Arsenal, but their recent break and Saturday’s fixture could be the perfect combination to help them return to winning ways.

Palace have won only once in their previous 11 games in all competitions, although they have made life awkward for their opponents on the road.

Roy Hodgson’s side have scored in five of their last six on their travels, so while the Gunners should have too much for Palace, it would not be a shock to see the Eagles find the back of the net.

Fit-again Jesus to make his mark

Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus has endured a frustrating season at the Emirates, with injuries derailing his  and Arsenal’s plans. Eddie Nketiah has filled the void when given the chance, but Jesus adds an extra gear in the final third as he links the play better than the England front man.

Jesus has scored three goals in his previous 10 appearances in all competitions, but he should be back to peak fitness after a spell on the sidelines.

Palace will struggle to contain Arsenal’s forwards for 90 minutes and Jesus should be on hand to take any opportunity that is presented to him.

Schedule taking its toll on Palace

Palace’s record in London derbies this season is dismal. They have picked up fewer points than any other side – six in six matches – and away from home, they have won just one of their previous 17 derbies. That gives us confidence to back Arsenal to win as the first leg of our bet builder.

The Gunners should be able to dictate the tempo from the start and we expect them to put Palace’s defence to the test early on. They have had over 17 shots in each of their past three games at home so backing them to have six or more on target is our second selection.

While we expect a one-sided affair, tempers are unlikely to flare. Arsenal have collected the fewest number of yellow cards in the division this season with 30, while Palace are 15th with 37. Under 4.5 cards looks a safe choice for the third element.

Finally, no team has won more corners than Arsenal this season, Arteta’s men collecting 158 at an average of 7.7 per game. Meanwhile, Palace average four per 90 minutes so our selection of over 8.5 corners should fly in comfortably given the statistics.
