Maryland voters approved a ballot question to allow sports betting in 2020. The sportsbooks offered customers free promotional play amounting to $63.8 million in the final nine days of November. Nevada and New Jersey handled more than $1 billion in sports wagers in recent months. Sports betting is challenging partly because the points spread equalizes good and bad teams. Sportsbooks possess a built-in advantage known as the “vigorish” or ‘juice’ commission. It provides the sportsbook a profit margin even if the money comes in equally from bettors on both sides of a wager.
