Villans can torment Red Devils

Aston Villa welcome Manchester United to Villa Park this afternoon for what promises to be an intriguing Premier League clash, with both sides firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish.

Unai Emery will be hoping his team can bounce back after a heavy defeat to Chelsea in their FA Cup replay on Wednesday, and they have a decent chance to do so against an outfit that have struggled for consistency all season.

United stunned Villa with a second-half fightback when these two sides met on Boxing Day, but Emery’s men look capable of turning the tables on the Red Devils in front of their own fans.

Villa have scored last in 11 of their previous 15 games in all competitions and conceded the opening goal in two of their past three Premier League home games. United can be slow starters at Old Trafford but are usually much quicker to find their rhythm on the road, where they have opened the scoring six times in their past 10 away trips.

However, Erik ten Hag’s side have been second-best after the break in four of their last five games on the road in the league, with a goal difference of 8-3 in favour of their opponents in the second half of those matches. That suggests it may be worth backing the hosts to take the points from a losing position.

Hojlund and Bailey to make their mark

There should be plenty of opportunities to hit the net in this fixture, which has had at least four goals scored on the past three occasions at Villa Park.

Rasmus Hojlund broke his Premier League duck with the winner in United’s 3-2 victory at Old Trafford six weeks ago and has not looked back since, scoring in four of his five subsequent appearances. The Dane is now getting the sort of frequent service that he was missing earlier in the campaign.

Backing him to bag in this contest looks like a solid play from the United side of things – while Leon Bailey appeals for a home goal because of his record at Villa Park.

The Jamaican attacker, who scored in the Villans’ 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United last week, has netted 12 Premier League goals since joining from Bayer Leverkusen – and 10 of those have come at home.

He also notched in his side’s 3-1 league win over United last season and a pre-season friendly against the same club 18 months ago, suggesting he could net against the Red Devils again today.

Dalot’s shot count is on the rise

Despite their victory at Molineux last week, United’s away record remains unconvincing – and they should be opposed at Villa Park.

Emery’s team had built a strong position at half-time against them on Boxing Day and will be determined not to let a lead slip again should they get their noses in front.

Adding Diogo Dalot to take at least one shot and Luke Shaw to be carded to a bet builder also look worthwhile.

Dalot took three shots in United’s 3-0 home win over West Ham last Sunday – the fifth Premier League game in a row he has been credited with at least one effort.

The Red Devils are taking a lot of short corners at the moment and working the ball towards the edge of the box where the Portuguese full back is often found lurking.

Shaw, meanwhile, has been carded in five of his 10 top-flight appearances this season and five of his past 10 in all competitions, so take the Englishman to be cautioned to round off your bet builder.
