Nothing to split top-four rivals

Villa lead Spurs by five points in the race for fourth place in the Premier League but the north London side have a game in hand, so a win for the visitors would arguably put them in pole position.

Unai Emery’s men ran out 2-1 winners in the reverse meeting in November but they will need to manage any potential fatigue, having played in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. In contrast Spurs will have enjoyed a week’s break by the time they head to the Midlands.

The hosts go into the game on the back of a four-match unbeaten run, winning their last three in the Premier League, and they have won 10 of their 13 home league games this season, losing just two.

Spurs are proving tough to beat on the road, losing just twice in the league while winning five and drawing five of the other 10 games. Ange Postecoglou’s men have scored in every single game they have played on their travels, though, and can give as good as they get against a Villa side who have kept just one clean sheet in their last seven domestic games – that coming against Sheffield United.

Keepers may have work cut out

Although these sides look destined to fight it out for fourth place in the Premier League, neither can be said to have built their campaigns on defensive strength.

Villa have conceded 37 goals in the Premier League to date and Spurs two more than that, while the score is 6-5 to Emery’s side in terms of clean sheets in the top flight.

Spurs have had 409 shots this season, the fourth-highest tally in the division, while Villa have had 398, the sixth best. That suggests both defences need work and both will be put to the test here.

As a result, we’re expecting both keepers to be called into action in both halves and to make at least one save in each.

Watkins and Son to lead the way

Two fantastic forwards will be on show in this one, with Ollie Watkins and Son Heung-min leading the respective front lines. The Villa front man has scored 16 goals in 27 appearances this season, while Son has 13 in 23 outings for Spurs.

Watkins has scored seven goals in his last six league appearances, while Son bagged his first goal since returning from the Asian Cup in the win over Crystal Palace last time out.

Both are integral to their club’s offensive strategies and that should play out in Sunday’s fixture.

Watkins’ hot streak has helped Villa amass 59 goals so far this season, with only the top three sides having scored more, while Spurs are again not far behind with 55. Having Son back also adds another dimension, with the north Londoners having scored at least two goals in their last five away games.

Postecoglou’s side are finding road wins hard to come by but it is not for a lack of trying. This should be a thrilling battle between two of the best attacking teams in the league – and a high-scoring one.
