Atlanta Hawks (18-25) vs. Golden State Warriors (18-22)

The NBA betting action continues Wednesday, January 24, 2024, with the Atlanta Hawks squaring off against the Golden State Warriors in the cross-conference clash at Chase Center in San Francisco, California, with the tip-off at 10:00 PM ET.

Atlanta and Golden State open their two-game regular-season series. The Warriors are listed as 6.5-point home favorites with a total of 234.0 points. They are without Chris Paul (hand), Gary Payton II (hamstring), and Moses Moody (calf), while the Hawks miss Trae Young (concussion), De’Andre Hunter (knee), Mouhamed Gueye (back), and Wesley Matthews (calf).

The Hawks have dropped two straight contests

The Atlanta Hawks (18-25; 11-32 ATS) ended their three-game winning streak last Saturday, suffering a heavy 116-95 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Two days later, the Hawks lost at the Sacramento Kings 122-107, failing to cover a 9-point spread.

The Hawks made just 38.7% of their field goals at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. Dejounte Murray led the charge in Trae Young’s absence, notching 35 points, ten rebounds, and six assists, while Bogdan Bogdanovic had 18 points and four dishes.

“We had some good opportunities. The ball just didn’t go in for a stretch there. We hung in there and kept battling," Hawks coach Quin Snyder said. "Obviously not the result you want, but these are the types of performances that you can build on.”

The Hawks hold the No. 10 seed in the Eastern Conference. They are 13th in the league in adjusted offensive efficiency (117.4 points per 100 possessions) and 27th in adjusted defensive efficiency (120.0). The Hawks’ defense ranks 23rd in 3-point percentage (38.1%) and 27th in assists allowed per 100 possessions (28.2).

The Warriors are back in action

The Golden State Warriors (18-22; 19-21 ATS) take the floor for the first time since Martin Luther King Day. Their last two games against the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks were postponed due to Dejan Milojevic’s death.

The Warriors have only won one of their previous five contests. They are coming off a 116-107 defeat at the Memphis Grizzlies. The Warriors shot 48.9% from the field but turned the ball over 19 times while sending the Grizzlies to the foul line a whopping 40 times. Stephen Curry accounted for 26 points and eight assists, and Jonathan Kuminga added 20 points and 11 rebounds.

"Their game plan was simple: Shoot as many 3s as possible, and get into transition as often as possible,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. “For us to foul 25 times to their 12, that's the story. They just played a really clean game.”

The Warriors are 12th in the Western Conference, a couple of games behind the No. 10 seed. Golden State scores 117.5 points per 100 possessions (12th in the NBA) on 36.9% shooting from deep (14th) while surrendering 118.4 points per 100 possessions (24th) on 35.9% shooting from downtown (10th).

I expect the struggling Warriors to play this game for their late assistant coach. They are not a great defensive team by any stretch of the imagination, but the Hawks are arguably even worse, so I like the Warriors in this spot.

The Hawks struggle to defend the 3-point line, so keep your eyes on Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. When it comes to covering the spread, Atlanta has been a complete disaster so far this season, and I expect to see more of the same when the Hawks take on the Warriors. The Hawks are 4-12 ATS in their past 16 games overall.

Prediction: Take the Golden State Warriors -6.5 (-110)

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

The Hawks prefer to play fast, and the Warriors won’t mind joining the party, given Atlanta’s defensive flaws. Atlanta is fifth in the league in pace (101.3 possessions per 48 minutes), while Golden State is 13th in this category (99.0).

Interestingly, the total has gone under in each of Atlanta’s last seven games overall. On the flip side, the over is 4-1 in Golden State’s last five contests overall and 5-1 in its previous six showings on the home court. Also, four of the last six meetings between the Warriors and Hawks have gone over.

Prediction: Go over 234.0 points (-110)
