THE LOWDOWN

AUSTRALIA

Coach: Andrew McDonald

Captain: Pat Cummins

  • Glenn Maxwell! What else needs to be said. Arguably the greatest innings in ODI history booked Australia a showdown with South Africa in the World Cup semi-finals, scoring an unbelievable 201 not out to carry his nation to victory by three wickets against Afghanistan.
  • Maxwell could hardly move after such a knock due to heavy cramp and what looked like a lower back injury, so don’t be at all surprised if he is given a well-earned rest with nothing at stake here from an Aussie point of view.

BANGLADESH

Coach: Chandika Harthurusingha

Captain: Shakib Al Hasan

  • Bangladesh’s win over Sri Lanka in their most recent game ended their long losing streak and puts them in a good position to finish inside the top eight of the World Cup group and thus secure their place in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
  • They’ll have to make do without their captain for this final group match though, Shakib Al Hasan having fractured a finger, so expect Najmul Hossain Shanto to lead the side again in Shakib’s absence.

THE PREDICTION

For Bangladesh, the key here is not to lose by a big enough margin that it would damage their net-run-rate badly enough to drop them below ninth-placed Sri Lanka in the table. Therefore, expect a conservative game from them, where winning is secondary to ensuring they aren’t thrashed. But with Australia already through, they are unlikely to be at their best and may well rest a few players. However, the depth of the Australian squad is strong and even if they aren’t at 100%, they should still wind up on the winning side against the Tigers.
