THE LOWDOWN

ENGLAND

Coach: Matthew Mott

Captain: Jos Buttler

  • Finally, after eight largely torturous games, England’s World Cup defence is finally over with them unable to qualify for the semi-finals following their latest defeat, how fitting that it was against old rivals Australia.
  • With Jos Buttler’s side eliminated, it would be no surprise to see younger players such as Harry Brook and Gus Atkinson given opportunities to play here with the likes of Liam Livingstone consistently under-performing and Mark Wood being due a rest.

NETHERLANDS

Coach: Ryan Cook

Captain: Scott Edwards

  • Netherlands didn’t get enough runs on the board against Afghanistan this past Friday, bowled out for 179 which was never likely to prove enough vs an in-form side still chasing a semi-final spot.
  • Victory for Netherlands here would guarantee that they finish above England in the final group stage table and just needing to end up above either Bangladesh and/or Sri Lanka as well to ensure qualification for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

THE PREDICTION

As bad as England have been across this tournament so far, defeat in this one would be almost a humiliation too far. This Netherlands side contains plenty of players with county cricket experience but were hammed by England in an ODI series in Amstelveen around one and a half years ago. Make no mistake, Netherlands are in with a real chance when taking into account how abysmally England have batted across the tournament, but England will surely have too much for them. If they don’t, it may well prove terminal for a number of international careers.
