The Lions entered the 2023 season as one of the most exciting teams in the NFL. After six years of playoff drought, they went 9-8 last year and are poised to be a big playoff contender this year. But a little hiccup in Week 2 at home against Seattle has them 2-1 going into Week 4.

They’re narrow 1.5-point favorites against the Packers after both teams took a Week 3 win. But in head-to-head matchups, the Lions have the advantage, too. They’ve beaten the Packers the last three times the teams have played each other.

And yet, these odds still mark a first for Detroit:

Something to watch: Will Detroit get a few key starters back for Thursday night? They were down a few players this past week against Atlanta, but that didn’t seem to slow their 20-6 roll.

But we’re paying attention to RB David Montgomery, LT Taylor Decker, CC Emmanuel Moseley, and more. Several are trending in the right direction.

Overall, the Lions are the team with momentum going into Thursday night. Their rookies have been showing up on the offense, and their 11th-ranked defense is scary.

Yes, the Packers have the same record as the Lions. But it just feels different. They’re very different teams who have made these wins very differently.

Against the Saints on Sunday, the Packers eeked out a 1-point win, but only after the Saints’ starting QB Derek Carr had to leave the game with an injury. Before that? The Packers were down 17-0.

They also lost in Week 2 against the Falcons, whom the Lions beat handily this past Sunday. Their head coach told the media he felt the team looked “sloppy” and really needed to improve. The question is: Can they improve by Thursday?

We’re not betting on it.

Keep an eye on the Packers’ IL, too. RB Aaron Jones, WR Christian Watson, and LT David Bakhtiari are all still listed as questionable for Thursday.

With such a narrow spread, the Lions shouldn’t have too much trouble covering on Thursday night if they look anything like we know they can. They have the edge on offense, with QB Jared Goff averaging 273 passing yards per game, putting him 6th in the NFL. They’re also averaging 111.7 rushing, which ranks them 11th.

The Packers are throwing for 209 and rushing for 93, which places them in 19th and 25th, respectively. On the defensive side, the Lions are looking scary, too. They had seven sacks in Sunday’s game against the Falcons, including two by Aidan Hutchinson.

Goff has hit the over on pass attempts in six of his last seven games and is looking ready for Thursday’s game.

FanDuel has the odds set for Goff at 33.5, with -125 odds for the over and -106 for the under. Jordan Love’s are set at 32.5, with the over slightly favored as well.
