Another week of MLB action gets underway on Monday. The slate features ten games and twenty teams in action as we quickly approach September and the most important games of the regular season.

It hasn’t been a great stretch for Aaron Nola recently. He’s gone just 20 innings combined in his last four starts and given up 15 runs over that stretch. With that being said, he’s striking batters out. Since the start of June, Nola has struck out 95 batters in just over 78 innings. That’s well over a strikeout per inning. Nola has at least six strikeouts in eight straight starts despite not going over 5.1 innings in any of his last four starts.

Nola gets the San Francisco Giants on Monday, and they are certainly familiar with the strikeout. The Giants have the third-highest strikeout rate in baseball and are coming off a weekend where they struck out 36 times in three games.

Nola has plenty of experience against Michael Conforto, JD Davis and Wilmer Flores from their days with the New York Mets. Against those three batters, Nola has a strikeout rate of over 40%. Davis and Blake Sabol have struck out in over a third of their at-bats this season. Recent call-up Wade Meckler has 11 strikeouts in five starts. There are plenty of opportunities for strikeouts here. Hopefully, Nola gives us some length and mows down some batters.

Julio Rodriguez came back to earth on Sunday as he went just 1-for-5 against the Houston Astros. However, even in a pedestrian performance, Rodriguez still racked up a double. Prior to Sunday, Rodriguez had 17 hits over a four-game period. He became just the second player in MLB history with four hits in four straight games.

Rodriguez has gone over 1.5 total bases in seven of his last eight games. Eventually, Rodriguez will come back down to Earth, but until then, it’s hard to ignore what he’s doing. On Monday, Rodriguez faces the Chicago White Sox and Touki Toussaint, who has struggled in August. He has allowed 11 earned runs in 14.1 innings, including four home runs over that span.

The Texas Rangers acquired Jordan Montgomery from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline. Since being acquired by the Rangers, Montgomery has made three starts, posting a 2.50 ERA over 18 innings. Most notably, he has 20 strikeouts in that time frame.

Montgomery provides length. He has gone at least six innings in 11 of his last 12 starts. Since the start of June, he has had at least five strikeouts in 11 of 13 starts.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are a tough matchup from a strikeout perspective. Only two teams in baseball strike out less than Arizona. However, they do fare a little worse against left-handed pitching. On top of that, the Diamondbacks have been swinging and missing lately as they were struck out 35 times in their last three games.

Montgomery should provide length and he’s a solid strikeout pitcher. This is a low number that should be attainable for one of Texas’s new additions.
