Betting Preview & Tips for The April Meeting

Renowned Horse Racing Tipster and Journalist Ed Quigley, aka ‘Longshot Ted’ offers up his best bets for what should be a great day of action at Cheltenham on Wednesday.

DEYRANN DE CARJAC e/w (1.45)

The Alan King trained 10-year-old looks to have solid each-way claims here. Connections have been unlucky this season, as Deyrann De Carjac needs good ground and has acquitted himself well in defeat this term despite not having his ideal underfoot conditions. The ground was too soft for him at Cheltenham last time out, and at Wetherby earlier in the season it absolutely lashed it down all morning and he was narrowly denied.

The standout piece of form is when he finished fifth in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Prestbury Park back in November. That race was red-hot. It was won by Ga Law, and also had Midnight River, Il Ridoto and French Dynamite ahead of him. That run came off a mark of 130, so off 127 here today he could easily run a big race with the weather forecast looking kind – there should be plenty of the word ‘Good’ in the going description.

COPPERHEAD e/w (2.40)

The wheels have well and truly come off Copperhead in recent times, but the silver lining is that he has plummeted down the weights, and this looks like very much last chance saloon for him. Rated 155 at his peak over fences in 2020, he has dropped down to 122 here so I am going to roll the dice for one last hurrah.

Having come down 33lb in the weights in 3 seasons it is now or never for the Joe Tizzard trained 9-year-old, and if he can’t show any spark here then he will be heading towards retirement. Dropping down into a 0-125 he has the back class to at least make an impact here, and gets the vote from me with Brendan Powell in the saddle.

CHASING FIRE (3.15)

Olly Murphy has had his string in fine fettle over the course of the last couple of months, and Chasing Fire has the opportunity to get back to winning ways. The 6-year-old lost his unbeaten record when ultimately being well beaten in the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, but he jumped and travelled well for a long way before being outpaced and in the end outclassed in that Grade 1 assignment. He goes from swimming with sharks to much calmer waters here, and he looks to have pressing claims of regaining teh winning thread. I think the step up in trip to 2m4f on the New Course will help, as will the drying ground. He is my selection with Aidan Coleman in the plate.

ANIGHTINLAMBOURN e/w (3.50)

The ground totally went against the Ben Pauling trained Mare in the KIm Muir, but a revival could easily be on the cards with ground much more to her liking on this occasion. She showed good form at Cheltenham at the back end of last year, including when winning at Prestbury Park on her penultimate start.

I can put a line through her no-show last month which came on ground that she simply didn’t act on. It may well have brought her forward fitness-wise too, and she could easily get involved in the business end of proceedings here with Kielan Woods in the saddle. Eased to a mark of 134 she looks an each-way player.

Don’t forget Ed will be back on Saturday, giving all his best bets for the Weekend action!
