Chelsea chasing shadows

Chelsea are in turmoil. Saturday’s home defeat by Brighton was their third in a row and fourth in five matches. The early signs do not suggest Frank Lampard will be able to summon the magic he showed in his playing days as interim manager and now they face one of Europe’s most accomplished sides.

Real Madrid might be playing second fiddle to Barcelona domestically this term, but that suits their Champions League push down to the ground. The holders can devote their full attention to retaining their European crown, given they are 11 points adrift in La Liga but in no danger of slipping out of the top four, with a 14-point cushion between them and fifth-placed Real Betis.

With that in mind, it is hard to envisage any result other than a Real Madrid win, even with the onus on Chelsea to come out firing. So little have Lampard’s side offered of late in games against Brighton, Wolves, Liverpool and Aston Villa, Tuesday is destined to be a challenging night.

Real racking up the goals

Chelsea have shipped six goals in the four matches they have played at Stamford Bridge since the impressive 2-0 win over Dortmund in the round of 16.

With two losses and two draws in that run, they look anything but a sturdy defensive unit capable of grinding out results, and face an unenviable task in keeping Real at bay.

Real put two unanswered goals past Cadiz on Saturday after doing the same to Chelsea last week, and scored twice in the defeat by Villarreal before that – in which key players were rested. They also racked up a total of 10 goals without reply in wins over Valladolid in the league and Barca in the cup.

In such form, a price of better than evens for them to find the net more than once in 90 minutes represents seriously good value.

Benzema poised to join the podium

With mid-table Celta Vigo and Girona plus relegation-threatened Almeria as their next three opponents in La Liga, Real Madrid need not overly worry about resting key man Karim Benzema.

Carlo Ancelotti had no qualms about throwing him in from the start in the win over Cadiz this weekend and the forward, who has eight goals in seven games across all competitions, can draw level with Robert Lewandowski on 91 Champions League goals if he hits the target once more, for a share of third place on the all-time list.

The Frenchman represents the biggest threat to Chelsea and he can be backed at a price better than evens to net at any time during 90 minutes.
