Toffees to pick up crucial victory

Although Everton lost 2-0 at local rivals Liverpool last time out, there were still positives to take from that encounter, most notably the James Tarkowski header that hit the post and the chance Tom Davies should have buried towards the end of the match.

It was always going to be tough to come away from Anfield with a positive result – and back at Goodison Park, a venue that Leeds have won at just once since 1990, should bring about a return to winning ways for the Toffees.

New boss Sean Dyche won his first game in charge, a 1-0 home victory over Arsenal when they were top of the table, and Everton have shown more organisation and defensive solidity in his first two matches than was apparent previously in the entire season.

England international Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s absence from the Anfield defeat was definitely felt and getting him back to full fitness sooner rather than later looks like it will be key to Everton’s chances of Premier League survival.

That being said, if the striker is unavailable for the second straight game, that should not impact too much as Dyche’s troops take on a Leeds side that are yet to find a replacement for boss Jesse Marsch and are struggling to pick up points.

In the two matches since the American departed, the Whites forfeited a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford to draw 2-2 before then losing 2-0 to the same opposition at Elland Road.

While there were positives to take from those two performances, Leeds are still without a league win since November 5 – a run of nine games – while their record of one away win from 11 top-flight assignments is the joint worst in the division.

The higher confidence looks to be with Everton right now and they can collect a massive three points that would take them out of the relegation zone at the expense of Saturday’s opponents.

Everton vs Leeds tip 1: Everton to win @ 7/5 with Betfred

Set pieces can get Tarkowski on the scoresheet

The appointment of Dyche was always likely to result in a greater threat from set pieces for Everton, and that was certainly the case in the 1-0 win over Arsenal when Tarkowski got on the scoresheet.

It could have been two-in-two for the English defender in the loss to the Reds, with his header from a corner hitting the post before Liverpool then produced a swift counter-attacking move to open the scoring.

Everton look a real threat when it comes to attacking set pieces – and against a Leeds side that has conceded seven times from these situations, the likelihood of Tarkowski notching for the second time in three outings is increased.

Tackles to fly at Goodison

With the stakes so high, Saturday’s encounter is unlikely to be one for the faint- hearted and there is every chance the referee will be kept busy, with cards expected to be brandished.

Leeds have made the most tackles in the Premier League this season – a staggering 510 – and the January arrival of Weston McKennie has only added another battering ram in the middle of the park for them.

The USA international has started the previous two games for the Whites, both against Manchester United, and he has been carded in each, highlighting his willingness to get stuck in.

There is also the argument that the 24-year-old is still getting used to the pace of play in England’s top flight and he is unlikely to get much time to think at Goodison Park.

Joining McKennie in the book could be Everton’s own enforcer, Amadou Onana. The Belgium international has picked up the most yellows for the Toffees – six in total – while he also leads his club’s foul count with 31.

The 21-year-old also did his best to get carded after being substituted in the 2-0 loss to Liverpool, as he got involved with an altercation on the side of the pitch late in the contest, and his fiery character makes him a prime booking candidate.
