BetVision allows NFL fans to watch and bet on games in same app

Ever since the Supreme Court repealed PASPA in 2018 and allowed for the widespread legalization of sports betting in the U.S., there has been rapid growth. There are now 34 states — plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico — with legalized sports betting.

But the proverbial white whale has always been the ability to stream NFL games and bet on them within the same app.

On Tuesday morning, Genius Sports — the NFL’s exclusive data distribution partner — unveiled BetVision, a platform that will allow football fans (and bettors) to watch and bet on NFL games on the same screen within certain sportsbook apps.

In the initial launch, the product will be available on Caesars Sportsbook, BetRivers and Fanatics Sportsbook, which will have the ability to “stream nationally distributed and local, regionalized live NFL games each week.”

BetVision will feature a low-latency video stream of games, along with integrated betting odds and on-screen wagering. In-game betting alerts and on-screen offers will be offered during breaks in game action, and graphic overlays and advanced Next Gen Stats will be available for users to toggle on and off.

Fanatics said in a press release that it has been streaming NFL games since Week 1. In order to stream an NFL game on the Fanatics Sportsbook app, customers must:

  • -Be in a state in which Fanatics Sportsbook is live (Massachusetts, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee)
  • -Have placed a bet with Fanatics Sportsbooks previously
  • -Place a wager on the game (as little as 10 cents) on the game he/she wants to watch
  • Have a saved payment method or “wager-able” balance

“We’re very pleased to be Genius’ first BetVision content partner as they continue to be on the cutting edge of sports betting experiences,” Brent Lawton, vice president business development and strategic investments of the NFL, said in the release announcing the launch. “BetVision allows us to create a differentiated way for fans to engage with NFL content.”

Make Locke, CEO of Genius Sports, noted in a press release that sports fans and bettors have increasingly demanded greater customization, deeper insights and the ability to bet seamlessly. “BetVision is leading a new era of immersive sports experiences,” Locke said in the release. “The launch brings together our capabilities across data tracking, video streaming, live data and sports wagering to create a game changing product for sportsbooks.”

While some U.S. sportsbook operators have had a watch-and-bet product with other leagues, like lower-level tennis, this is a massive step forward for the potential market of sports betting in U.S. and — if it works well — gives a significant point of differentiation for the sportsbooks using it.
