British Grand Prix betting preview: Qualifying results and Formula 1 best bets for Silverstone

For a third-place qualifier, +145 are long odds for a top six finish. While it’s fair to be skeptical of an unproven commodity like Piastri, it’s critical to remember that, unlike his teammate, Piastri didn’t receive McLaren’s massive upgrade package until this week. This means the new and improved McLaren racecar has now participated in three qualifying sessions, placing fourth (Norris, Austrian GP), third (Piastri, British GP), and second (Norris, British GP), respectively. In its lone race, Norris drove that upgraded racecar to a fourth. Piastri’s success on Saturday was no fluke: a +145 wager on the Australian rookie to finish no more than three places worse than he started is good value.

With Verstappen securing a fifth straight pole, the Dutchman remains the overwhelming favorite on Sunday, with said victory anchoring the first leg of both these hedged parlays. As for the winning margin this Sunday at Silverstone, FanDuel’s oddsmakers evidently expect Verstappen to clear 12-seconds easily.

However, not only did Lando Norris nearly out-qualify the reigning Driver’s Cup champion, suggesting Red Bull’s pace advantage might not be quite so dominant at Silverstone as we’ve seen most of the season, there are all sort of extenuating circumstances that can (and often do) result in Verstappen winning by fewer than 12 seconds in races he has dominated. Just last week, Red Bull’s lead driver opted to pit on the penultimate lap while leading by 25 seconds, in order to steal a point for fastest lap. As a result, the Austrian Grand Prix’s eventual winning margin plummeted from 25 to 5 seconds. More concretely, of the nine races run in 2023, only two have been decided by fewer than 10 seconds. At +460 and +700, you can play it safe hedging just a quarter unit on both these parlays. It won’t sting if you lose, and you’ll make out like a bandit if either of them hit.
