Saints marching into contention

Southampton are now 7/4 to be promoted to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Russell Martin’s side beat Bristol City 1-0 Wednesday to stretch their unbeaten run to 10 league matches.

Saints are fourth in the Championship and the promotion betting odds, both of which are headed by Leicester City, the 1/10 favourites who were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom club Sheffield Wednesday the same evening. Jeff Kendrick scored a 90th-minute equaliser for the Owls.

Leicester are a point clear of Ipswich Town, the 4/7 third favourites for promotion who defeated Millwall 3-1 on Wednesday. The bookmakers have Leeds United as 8/15 second favourites after they beat Swansea City 3-1 in midweek, despite the seven-point gap between them and the Tractor Boys.

West Bromwich Albion (5/1) and Middlesbrough (11/2) complete the top six in the betting. Albion are fifth and won 1-0 at Cardiff City on Tuesday – their seventh win in 10 league games, while Boro beat Preston 4-0 that night and are 10th, but have won eight of their past 11 second-tier fixtures.
