Charlotte Hornets vs. New Orleans Pelicans Prediction, Preview, and Odds

The Charlotte Hornets are traveling to the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana to face the New Orleans Pelicans. Charlotte is 8-29 this season and sits 13th in the Eastern Conference. New Orleans is sixth in the Western Conference with a record of 24-17. The Pelicans beat the Hornets earlier this season with a final score of 112-107. The game is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST.

Charlotte Generating No Offense

The Charlotte Hornets are heading to New Orleans after another loss on Sunday against the Miami Heat with a final score of 87-104. This would be the third consecutive game for the Hornets where they score under 100 points. Charlotte this season is averaging 108.3 points per game, placing them third to last in points per game. We are seeing most of their issues coming from their shooting percentages as they have a field goal shooting percentage of only 45.6% and a three pointer shooting percentage of 35.5%.

On defense the Hornets are not playing much better as they are allowing 120.1 points per game. The Hornets allow the worst shooting percentage in the league with teams shooting a 39.7% against the Hornets. Charlotte also seems to have an issue at rebounding the ball as they rank fourth to last in defensive rebounding.

The Hornets are without Gordon Hayward as he is out until late January due to a calf injury. Hayward has the fourth most points per game for the Hornets averaging 14.5 per game.

Pelicans Well Rounded Team

The New Orleans Pelicans are returning home after losing on Monday against the Dallas Mavericks with a final score of 120-125. The Pelicans are coming off a five game road trip and will be looking to start a four game home stand. The Pelicans are playing well on offense as they rank 12th in points per game averaging 116.5. There is a lot of depth scoring for the Pelicans as seven players for New Orleans are generating at least ten points a game.

On defense the Pelicans are playing even better as they allow 112 points per game. New Orleans is ranked third in opponent three pointer shooting percentage and sixth in field goal shooting percentage. The Pelicans are also finding the ball with these missed shots as they are ninth in the league in defensive rebounding. New Orleans also is getting turnovers a lot this season as they rank number one in stolen balls.

Rating:

Charlotte has been failing to perform even with the return of LaMelo Ball to their lineup. They have been unable in their last three games to go over 100 points and I don't think they will start here against a stronger defense in New Orleans. Charlotte is averaging 94.7 points per game in their last three while New Orleans has averaged 117 in theirs. This game just screams one-sided for me and I am going to side with New Orleans winning by a large margin.

Take the Pelicans at -12.5.

Prediction: New Orleans Pelicans -12.5 ( -108 )

Rating:

Charlotte has been struggling to hit 100 points so for the over to hit we would need at least 135 points out of the Pelicans which I don't think they will be able to hit. The pace is going to slow down once the Pelicans have the lead and are not going to try and run up the scoreboard in the late minutes of the game. When we take both teams' averages on offense and defense this season, in their last three games, and home/away, we get a projected score of 227 which while close to the line, still falls under.

I am taking the under at 229.5.

Prediction: Under 229.5 ( -110 )
