Cincinnati and Louisville will play in the first-ever Fenway Bowl in 2022. The game was created to debut during the 2020 season but was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. In 2021, Virginia and SMU were chosen to play but it was again canceled when Virginia had to back out due of COVIV issues on the roster.

The Fenway Bowl is one of four football games played in baseball stadiums these days. The others are the Pinstripe Bowl (Yankee Stadium), Holiday Bowl (Petco Park) and Guaranteed Rate Bowls (Chase Field).

Cincinnati and Louisville are longtime rivals. They first played each other in 1929. In 1966 they began an annual series for one of the best trophies in college football, The Keg of Nails. The series ended in 2013 when Louisville joined the ACC. This is their first meeting since Scott Satterfield left the Cardinals to take the open job at Cincinnati.

Louisville's Malik Cunningham won't play in the Fenway Bowl. Brock Domann will start in his place. Cunningham had a down season, but still had 2,166 yards and 20 touchdowns in 10 games.

Cincinnati hasn't played in a New Year's Six Bowl since 2019. Last year the Bearcats reached the College Football Playoff and lost to Alabama 27-6 in the Cotton Bowl. The year before they found themselves in Peach Bowl against Georgia and they lost 24-21. They crushed Boston College 38-0 in 2019 Birmingham Bowl and a win here would give them 10 wins for the fourth time in five seasons.
