CONCACAF Gold Cup matches and quarterfinal schedule: Canada faces USA in knockout stage

Only eight teams remain after the CONCACAF Gold Cup’s group stage wrapped up on Tuesday.

The latest: Each of CONCACAF’s four 2022 World Cup representatives — Mexico, Costa Rica, Canada and the USA — have advanced to the knockout stage but only two will make it onto the semifinal. Mexico is a hefty favourite over Costa Rica while group stage-leading USA is -122 against Canada.

Check out the CONCACAF Gold Cup matches and our odds for the quarterfinal games, which begin Saturday, July 8.

July 8 quarterfinal matches

Panama vs. Qatar

Qatar was a heavy underdog in its final group stage match against Mexico but the 2023 invitees managed to pull off a 1-0 upset despite being out-possessed 77-23 and outshot 25-1. It was a lucky result, but a result nonetheless.

The Maroons will play undefeated Panama (2-1-0) to kick off the quarterfinal action.

Mexico vs. Costa Rica

Mexico was on the wrong side of Qatar’s upset but the Tricolor dominated that game and are deservedly the largest favourites of any quarterfinal side.

Costa Rica snuck into the elimination stage with a 1-1-1 record after beating Martinique 6-4 on Tuesday.

July 9 quarterfinal matches

Guatemala vs. Jamaica

Jamaica has arguably been the most impressive team in this tournament.

The Reggae Boyz were undefeated (2-1-0) in the group stage with a plus-eight goal differential. They tied the Americans 1-1 in the tournament opener and then proceeded to blow out Trinidad & Tobago (4-1) and Saint Kitts & Nevis (5-0).

They’ll need to beat Guatemala to secure a spot in the semis.

USA vs. Canada

The quarterfinal is wrapped up with its most heavily anticipated match — Canada vs. USA. The Canadians underperformed in the group stage, drawing two inferior opponents before beating Cuba 4-2 to punch its quarterfinal ticket.

The USA, meanwhile, led the group stage in goal differential (+12) and goals scored (13).

These teams met — albeit with entirely different rosters — last month in the Nations League final and the Americans secured a 2-0 victory.
