Cowboys vs. Dolphins: Preview, odds and best bets

The Dallas Cowboys (10-4) had their five-game win streak snapped in Buffalo last week, and they’ll try to get back on track in South Florida on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Miami Dolphins (10-4). Miami has won four of its past five. Each of these teams has been criticized for beating up on inferior opponents and struggling when facing someone their own size and girth. One team will come away with a quality win this week in this battle of Super Bowl hopefuls. In recent years, the Cowboys have been nothing if not resilient. The Cowboys have won and covered in nine straight games following a loss. The last time Dallas lost consecutive games was more than two years ago, and it took overtime to do so. In order to continue that resiliency, the run defense will need to be sharper. They got gashed by James Cook last week to the tune of 179 rushing yards, and the Dolphins are one of the better running attacks in the league. If they can recover from last week’s clunker in Buffalo, it will be business as usual for this bunch.

The Cowboys are 0-3 on the road against teams with a winning record, but they did beat Philadelphia a few weeks ago in Dallas. The Dolphins, on the other hand, have not beaten a single team currently with a winning record all season. Tua Tagovailoa hears all the criticism but only cares about his team winning.

The Dolphins have finally hit the gauntlet of their schedule; their last three games are against the Cowboys, at Baltimore and against Buffalo in the regular season finale. A win this week will clinch a playoff appearance for the second consecutive season.

Something has to give in this matchup. Neither team has been good against other good teams, and the Cowboys are as Jekyll and Hyde as they come. But Dallas’ secondary has the personnel to slow down the Dolphins’ pass game, especially if Tyreek Hill misses another game. No team in the NFL has been better at covering spreads than the Cowboys since the start of the 2021 season. When Dallas is playing, err on the side of backing Dak Prescott and company.

Over his past five games Lamb is averaging 66.2 receiving yards per game, and that includes a game with 116 yards. This time period has coincided with the emergence of Brandin Cooks and Jake Ferguson as trusted weapons for Prescott in the passing game. Miami possesses a formidable pass defense, including Jalen Ramsey. This number is simply too high to count on Lamb reaching.
