Liverpool can go top of the Premier League table with a victory over Crystal Palace in the early kick-off on Saturday.

Everyone remembers the 3-3. Three Crystal Palace goals in the final 11 minutes of their May 2014 meeting with Liverpool made for one of the greatest comebacks in Premier League history.

It also essentially confirmed that Liverpool would not be champions that year. Two dropped points at Selhurst Park put Manchester City in pole position to claim the prize - and they did exactly that a few days later.

More recently, though, Liverpool have been almost flawless at Palace’s home ground. They have won eight of their last nine visits to Selhurst Park. The exception was a goalless draw with Patrick Vieira’s men in February this year.

Around the mid-2010s, Palace also had success against Liverpool at Anfield: under different managers, they won at the famous stadium in 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17.

But their overall record against the Reds is poor since that last victory. The last 12 head-to-head clashes between this pair have produced 10 Liverpool wins and two draws.

Still, Jurgen Klopp will not be taking this fixture lightly. Palace are in poor form and they are yet to get going on home turf this term. But they are a team - and Selhurst Park is a stadium - where results can be pulled out of the bag.

Liverpool will go top of the table with a win in this match - at least temporarily, with Arsenal in action against Aston Villa in the late game on Saturday. That is quite an incentive, especially as the Reds have not ended a Premier League gameweek in first place since September 2021.

Liverpool have made Selhurst Park a happy hunting ground in recent years and that should be the case again on Saturday.

Liverpool welcomed Chris Wilder back to the Premier League by beating his Sheffield United 2-0 in the midweek round of fixtures.

Goals from Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai earned Liverpool another three points, but they did not have everything their own way at Bramall Lane.

Indeed, the Blades had chances against Klopp’s side and they could have made things interesting had they managed to convert one before Szoboszlai wrapped up the win in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Klopp will have been delighted with the clean sheet in particular. It was Liverpool’s fifth of the campaign - only Arsenal and Newcastle United have more - while no team in the division has conceded fewer goals.

Liverpool’s defensive record has not really been commented upon, perhaps because attention has been drawn to the new-look midfield and the strength in depth in attack.

But another clean sheet should be well within reach against a Crystal Palace side that has scored the second-fewest number of goals this season, and the fewest at home.

Crystal Palace are really struggling for form. They have taken just four points from the last 21 available. In the last six rounds of fixtures, only Burnley and Nottingham Forest have worse records.

Roy Hodgson did not exactly endear himself to the club’s supporters with his comments afterwards, when he suggested Palace fans had been “spoiled” in recent years.

Hodgson will almost certainly not be in charge at Selhurst Park next season and there has been talk that he could be moved on soon unless results improve.

Unfortunately for the septuagenarian, Palace’s upcoming fixture list is daunting. After the visit of Liverpool, the Eagles will face Manchester City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea and Brentford before 2023 is out.

With Ebere Eze out injured and Michael Olise still finding his feet after a lengthy lay-off of his own, the defensive triangle of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and centre-backs Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen is probably Palace’s strongest weapon right now.

Even so, Liverpool should have little trouble breaching Palace’s backline on Saturday. Bournemouth scored in both halves at Selhurst Park in midweek and Klopp’s team can do so here.

Mohamed Salah has not scored in any of his three Premier League appearances since the November international break.

He was on target against LASK in the Europa League but failed to find the back of the net against Manchester City, Fulham and Sheffield United, even as Liverpool scored in all three of those matches.

It is only a matter of time before Salah is on the scoresheet again - and Crystal Palace will fear another goal for the Egyptian is on the way this weekend.

Salah has scored seven goals in 10 appearances against Palace during his Liverpool career.

We fancy his chances of adding to that tally this weekend, not least because the Eagles will be without their first-choice left-back Tyrick Mitchell due to injury.
