Wolves vs Liverpool predictions

There was plenty of doom and gloom surrounding Liverpool before the start of the season. The club still had significant work to do in the transfer market after a disappointing campaign last time out.

There were even whispers about whether Jurgen Klopp had taken the Reds as far as he could after eight years at the helm.

As it is, Liverpool have taken 10 points from a possible 12 at the start of the 2023/24 campaign, a tally bettered only by Manchester City.

That is in spite of the fact they have already had to face Chelsea and Newcastle United - two fellow top-four hopefuls - in their first two away games.

They also ended the transfer window in decent shape. In midfield, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner have in effect been traded for Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

That represents a clear upgrade, even though Liverpool were ultimately frustrated in their pursuits of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Just as significantly, Mohamed Salah is still at Anfield despite strong interest from Saudi Arabia’s Pro League before that country’s September 7 deadline.

Another defender would have been welcome but Liverpool may well have a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title again.

With games against West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion on the horizon, this is a match that Liverpool really need to be winning.

📝 Wolves vs Liverpool betting tips

Wolves could be set for a season of struggle, so Liverpool will be confident of coming out on top in this one.

Liverpool to score in both halves - 10/11 (bet365)

While most Liverpool fans agreed that the midfield and defence could have done with strengthening over the summer, no one felt attacking additions were really necessary.

Sure, Kylian Mbappe would have been welcomed with open arms in the red half of Merseyside, but Liverpool are already well stocked in forward areas.

We have seen the benefit of their depth already this term. Darwin Nunez came off the bench to notch a match-winning brace against Newcastle in brilliant fashion.

Elsewhere, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo have rotated effectively, with Klopp able to tailor his selection for the opposition in question.

It will be interesting to see which trio he picks against Wolves, with only Salah a nailed-on starter these days.

Liverpool have scored in all four of their Premier League matches so far this season and their frontmen will fancy their chances of another successful afternoon against a Wolves team that is averaging two goals against per game in 2023/24.

Liverpool will look to make a fast start after the international break and we fancy their chances of finding the back of the net either side of half-time.

Wolves to take over 10.5 shots - Evens (bet365)

Wolves were dealt a blow before the season had even got under way, as Julen Lopetegui departed the club just days before the big kick-off.

Gary O’Neil was hastily appointed as his replacement and his team turned in an excellent performance against Manchester United in gameweek one.

Wolves were unfortunate to lose that match 1-0, but two defeats in their subsequent three fixtures have left them just outside the relegation zone. The Molineux faithful are beginning to fear that a difficult season lies ahead.

It is still early days, though, and Wolves have not had the easiest start to the season with games against Manchester United, Brighton and now Liverpool.

There was also substantial turnover in the summer transfer market and it will take a while longer for the players to get used to O’Neil’s demands.

Scoring goals has been Wolves’ biggest problem over the last couple of years but they did find the net twice against Crystal Palace last time out.

They also sit ninth in the league for shots per game, which suggests they are still managing to create opportunities.

Liverpool remain without Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate is a doubt too, so Wolves could have some joy going forward.

Mohamed Salah to score any time - 20/21 (bet365)

Liverpool were given a scare last week as Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad pushed hard to sign Salah. According to reports, they had a world-record £215m bid rebuffed by the Reds.

That is a jaw-dropping amount of money and there are some who think Liverpool should have taken it in exchange for a 31-year-old who only has two years left on his contract.

On the other hand, it would have meant Liverpool not being able to replace their best player over recent years until January at the earliest. Without Salah, moreover, it is hard to envisage them challenging for the title.

Salah did not kick up a fuss and he will be fully focused on Wolves. The Egypt international has already scored two goals this season and he will expect to increase his tally in the early kick-off on Saturday.
