Houston Astros

The Astros had a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth in the Friday opener of this set but eventually lost 4-1. Houston’s lone RBI came courtesy of Jose Altuve. On Saturday the Astros scored three in both the fifth and eighth innings in a 9-2 win. Alex Bregman finished with four RBI and three runs, while both Chas McCormick and Jose Abreu had two RBI each.

For the starter job in the Sunday finale the Astros will go with Justin Verlander. This year over 20 starts Verlander is 9-6 with a 3.19 ERA and 103 Ks in 118.1 innings. Verlander is 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA in his last three starts total.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll stick with the Astros in this one. Verlander is on a nice roll these days, but he’s got a couple of up-and-down starts in his last trio. In that time Verlander is 3-0, but he’s given up seven earned in 17.0 total innings. The good news is that Verlander is coming off 6.0 clean frames against the Red Sox and should be fine here as well. On Saturday Houston had a really nice all-around offensive effort with 14 team hits. The bullpen was sharp as well (4.0 innings; zero earned; four hits, zero walks; six Ks), helping keep the Tigers at bay. If Verlander is sharp here, I like Houston to keep it up and bag the series in the rubber match.
