Every Premier League signing made on transfer deadline day as clubs rein in spending

Only a handful of players had joined Premier League clubs by the 11pm cutoff on what will go down as one of the quietest January transfer deadline days ever.

While more deals are possible after the deadline, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Burnley were the only sides to sign more than one player, while Crystal Palace's signing of midfielder Adam Wharton from Blackburn for a fee which could rise to £22million was the most expensive signing of the day.

“The way they have brought players from the Championship and developed them into world-class players in the Premier League is something that stood out to me,” Wharton said on the club’s website. “It is a big reason why I wanted to come here.”

Fulham left it late, but they finally announced the signing of Chelsea striker Armando Broja on loan until the end of the season around 90 minutes after the deadline, having needed an extension from the Premier League. While that move went through, Said Benrahma's move from West Ham to Lyon fell through, leaving the French club furious. Lyon released a spiky statement, accusing West Ham of "incomprehensible behaviour" and blaming them for not completing the paperwork, despite constant reminders.

"Olympique Lyonnais deeply regrets this situation and this decision, demonstrating a deep lack of respect on the part of West Ham for the Institution and the player," Lyon said in a statement. "The club reserves the right to initiate all appropriate procedures necessary to validate the operation later, and to hold West Ham accountable if necessary."

Burnley brought in 21-year-old centre-back Maxime Esteve on loan from Montpellier as well as Lorenz Assignon, a 23-year-old right-back, on loan from Rennes.

“I’m really happy, it’s been a long day and it’s been a day of hard decisions but I’m very pleased to be here," said Assignon. “I had a number of clubs to choose from but I spoke to the manager and straight away knew that I wanted to be here. I’m ready to go. It’s the best league in the world and I’m really excited to be a part of it.”

Aston Villa signed Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough for a fee which could rise to £15m, while Lino Sousa joined on an undisclosed fee from Arsenal and goalkeeper Joe Gauci signed from Adelaide United. Rogers said: “I’m so grateful and honoured to be given this opportunity to do so. Now it’s down to me to show what I’m about and why I deserve to be here.”

Nottingham Forest signed goalkeeper Matz Sels, Bournemouth signed Turkish forward Enes Unal, defender Mason Holgate joined Sheffield United on loan from Everton, while youngsters Rodrigo Ribeiro ( Nottingham Forest ), Taylan Harris (Luton) and Caylan Vickers ( Brighton ) also completed moves. Swedish wonderkid Lucas Bergvall has agreed to a £10m move to Tottenham for next season.

Premier League clubs have also allowed several players to leave, with Tottenham forward Alejo Veliz joining Sevilla on loan, Chelsea's Andrey Santos moving to sister club Strasbourg, Nottingham Forest's Orel Mangala moving to Lyon on loan and Mahmoud Dahoud exiting Brighton for a loan move to Stuttgart.
