Willie Simmons signed nine players on the first day of the early signing period Wednesday.

FAMU is looking to fill needs, add depth and balance its roster. Levontai Summersett, a two-way starter at North Fort Myers High, committed to FAMU last spring. Cherif Seye, Tyrese Gibson-Battles, Ashton Grable and Deco Wilson are defensive linemen signed. Jamari Gassett is a transfer from Buffalo. FAMu has been very aggressive in its recruiting efforts this offseason.

Quinn Gray is the new head coach at Division II Albany State. He will be introduced in January. Gray played for FAMU from 1997 to 2001 and is FAMu's all-time leader in passing yards (7,378). He played in the NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs.

FAMU men's basketball team lost 88-68 at Kentucky in the Unity Series. FAMU hit 52 percent of their field-goal attempts, 56.3 percent on three-point tries and 87.5 percent from the foul line. The Rattlers also gave the Wildcats a scare in second half, going on a 14-0 run to cut a 69-48 UK lead to 69.62.
