It’s been a tough start for punters in the early weeks of this new PGA Tour season.

Chris Kirk (The Sentry), Grayson Murray (Sony Open) and amateur Nick Dunlap (The American Express) were all shock winners but the narrative may be about to change.

This week’s venue, Torrey Pines in California, has held a pair of US Opens in recent memory and the winners were two legends of the game: Tiger Woods in 2008 and Jon Rahm in 2021.

Tiger won this event - the Farmers Insurance Open - no less than seven times while other champions this century include Phil Mickelson, Jose Maria Olazabal, John Daly, Bubba Watson and Justin Rose.

Two layouts are used here, the tougher South Course that staged those two US Opens and the much shorter North.

The South is super-long at 7,765 yards compared to the North’s 7,258 yards. Both are Par 72s.

Players alternate between the two tracks on Wednesday and Thursday before those making the cut tackle the South on Friday and Saturday.

Yes, you read that right. Due to avoiding a TV scheduling clash with the NFL play-offs, this event is played Wednesday to Saturday so make sure those bets are placed in time.

The weather forecast looks pleasant, with warm and dry conditions expected on all four tournament days.

The last three winning scores in this event are -13, -15 and -14, a stark contrast to last week’s birdie-fest at The American Express that was won with -29.

Keegan Bradley couldn’t quite convert a 54-hole lead on his latest start but second place at the Sony Open a fortnight ago shows his game is in rude health.

This looks a great place for him to continue that hot form as the American has an impressive record in this event since making his debut back in 2011, the year he won the US PGA Championship.

Bradley had three top 25s in his first four visits, posted fourth in 2017, fifth in 2018 and was runner-up last year.

“I love this course, I love coming here, I just love this tournament,” he said last year.

Bradley can hopefully give punters something to love too so back him each-way at 28/1 (1/5 odds, first 6) with Spreadex.

Tony Finau has been one of this tournament’s best performers in the last decade and can get the better of debutant Ludvig Aberg in a 72-hole match bet at bet365. Finau is 11/10.

Aberg is a huge talent but hasn’t quite got going since the calendar flipped to 2024, finishing 47th at The Sentry and 30th in the Sony Open.

Finau has eight top 25s in his nine starts in this event, that run including four top sixes, and warmed up with 25th at The American Express last week.

Harris English is another course horse and well worth a bet at 5/1 with bet365 to crack the top 10.

The 34-year-old was runner-up in this tournament in 2015, eighth in 2018 and third when it staged the 2021 US Open.

He finished fast to take 10th at the Sony Open two weeks ago.
