2024 Farmers Insurance Open Picks & Odds: Can Homa Defend Torrey Title?

The West Coast Swing moves to Torrey Pines after Nick Dunlap made history at PGA West, but while the amateur may dominate golf headlines for a couple more days, this week's golf odds board is all about the California kids.

Among those California natives is Max Homa, who hasn't played since Kapalua but is back to defend his title from a season ago. He's available at 10/1, good for second on the board.

Find out who's on top in our Farmers Insurance Open betting preview below, including free golf picks, a breakdown of the field, and more.

Farmers Insurance Open picks and predictions

Collin Morikawa over Patrick Cantlay (-115)

As great as Patrick Cantlay is week in and week out, even the best golfers present opportunities to stay away or even fade. This week presents such a chance.

He comes to Torrey Pines following a T52 finish at the Amex in which he lost 5.24 strokes with his putter (worst since 2022 Amex) and 5.6 strokes on approach (worst since 2022 PLAYERS). Not great, Bob!

And while those are extreme outliers, I’m not banking on the bounceback to come at Torrey Pines. He last played here in 2019 and has made just one cut in three attempts with that weekend appearance being just a T51 (2018).

On the flipside, Morikawa is fresh off a win at the ZOZO back in October and opened the new season with a T5 at Kapalua in which he ranked second on approach and third from tee to green. He also ranks first in the field in total strokes gained over the last three months (Cantlay is 19th).

Add in the fact he finished third here a season ago and I’m happy to fade Cantlay in favor of the two-time major champ.

Pick: Collin Morikawa over Patrick Cantlay (-115 at FanDuel)

Keegan Bradley Top 20 (+150)

What’s not to love about Keegan’s chances this week? He enters in great form after a T2 at the Sony Open and brings more than a decade’s worth of Torrey Pines experience that includes several quality results.

He’s got three Top 5s among seven Top 25s in 12 attempts here at the Farmers and among those is last year’s solo-second finish in which he led the field in strokes gained putting and was in contention the entire weekend.

This is a guy who ranks sixth in the field in total strokes gained over the last year and has logged Top 20s in four of his last five starts. Put it all together and you get a guy capable of making a serious run at another trophy.

Pick: Keegan Bradley Top 20 (+150 at DraftKings)

Farmers Insurance Open field and favorites

While lacking Scheffler, Rory, and Hovland, this field has a solid top-end with eight of the OWGR's Top 20.

That list starts with solo favorite Xander Schauffele at 9/1, who's kicked off his 2024 campaign with T10 and T3 finishes at Kapalua and PGA West, respectively. He logged a T13 here a season ago but also finished runner-up behind Patrick Reed — albeit five shots back — in 2021.

Below Xander is a trio of California stars available at 10/1: defending champion Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, and Collin Morikawa.

On top of his win in South Africa back in November, Homa hasn't finished worse than T14 dating back to July and began his 2024 season with a T14 at the Sentry. Meanwhile, Cantlay finished just T52 at the Amex and missed the cut here at Torrey Pines when he last played this event in 2019.

Morikawa has fared better, both of late and here at Torrey. He followed up his win at the ZOZO with a seventh-place finish at the Hero World and a T5 at Kapalua. He also finished solo third here at the Farmers a season ago.

Ludvig Aberg rounds out the Top 5 at  +1,800, with Sungjae Im (20/1), Jason Day (25/1), and Tony Finau (25/1) headlining the next tier of favorites.
