Horse racing. Known as the ‘Sport Of Kings’, an industry worth billions, a very serious business…but to some, it’s a great chance for a piss take and a laugh. A good way of doing that is via horse names, some a play on words, some on the risque side and some are just very cleverly named.Down below is our top ten.
1 – Ungrateful Ellen: Price Bloodstock are very good when it comes naming their horses and they produced a beauty several years ago with a mare called Ungrateful Ellen. A clever name because she was by Grey Swallow out of a mare called Degeneres. Join the dots and you’ll know why it’s a very sharp name. The mare actually showed decent ability throughout her career, highlighted by a second in the QLD Oaks to the mighty mare Winx.
2 – Far Canal: Crossing codes to greyhounds to come up with this one. It speaks for itself if said out loud. The Kiwi based dog showed good talent in his career but it was just hilarious listening to the callers trying to get it’s name out normally.
3 – Arrrrr: Funny name but the horse made headlines worldwide due to the call. US based horse that is a favourite of Jack Sparrow and the replay down below went viral thanks to the call. He should have been paid extra for the amount of mayo he put on it.
4 – Hoof Hearted: When read normally, it’s innocent. But when the caller down below screams it out in a finish of a horse race, you can understand why this US based horse also went viral, making headlines across the world for the hilarious call.
5 – Two In The Pink: Word of warning: Maybe best not to Google this phrase. Comedian Jimmy Carr has championed it and miraculously, it got through the UK system to be a name for a horse. She raced around a decade ago and was able to win a race at Kempton Park. Clever play on words if you are a Star Wars fan and the horse actually showed decent talent for Michael Moroney. He won the 2001 Saab on Derby Day to get into the Melbourne Cup where he ran fifth to Ethereal. Unfortunately he didn’t capture any positive form after that and was retired in 2003. One of the more outrageous names for a horse to the untrained eye but it was very well named given Suzanne Philox, who named horses for Bob & Jack Ingham before doing it for Darley and Godolphin, was a Waikato native in New Zealand and it’s a name used for rural towns. The horse was a very good horse, winning a host of Group races and ran good races behind some champions, including Mahogany. How this name got through the system I do not know but credit to connections for the clever name, albeit a tad on the risque side. On face value, it’s normal, but given the sire is Foreplay…it speaks for itself. He wasn’t blessed with the greatest amount of ability but he did win a couple of races, noteworthy by ‘distance’ and ‘seven lengths’…with a name like that, it’s a no brainer he won by so far given the other runners didn’t want to be near him. Again, how it got through to be a name of a horse…no idea given how self explanatory the name is. But, when you look at the breeding, the naming of the horse is elite.
