THE LOWDOWN

GENOA

Genoa gained promotion to the top-flight last season under Alberto Gilardino and their pre-season expectations, after some interesting business done by owners 777 Partners, were that they would comfortably survive. However, despite being fairly comfortably above the bottom three, it has been a generally underwhelming start to the campaign.

They come into this on the back of a 2-1 loss to Cagliari, who gained promotion alongside them last season. They have now suffered three defeats in their last four matches in Serie A as they sit in the bottom-half. They have managed just three victories in their 11 matches so far this season with a fairly poor record of just 12 goals scored.

HELLAS VERONA

After escaping relegation in a relegation playoff against Spezia last season, Hellas Verona were expected to improve this time around but after a bright start to the campaign, they have quickly dwindled away. Verona started with back-to-back victories and the last time they did that they went onto to win the title.

However, they have now not won in their last nine matches in the league, ten in all competitions, and begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places. They come into this on the back of a 3-1 defeat at home to Monza in their most recent outing, which means they have now suffered four successive defeats.

THE TEAM NEWS

GENOA

Claudio Ranieri has a few injury concerns for this weekend, especially in attack, with Mateo Retegui unavailable and Junior Messias doubtful for this one.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Martinez; De Winter, Dragusin, Vasquez; Sabelli, Frendrup, Badelj, Strootman, Caricol; Malinovskiy, Gudmundsson

UNAVAILABLE: Retegui (Injured), Jagiello (Injured)

HELLAS VERONA

Hellas Verona have no definite injury concerns for the trip to Genoa but they do have a couple of doubts, most notably their winger, Jayden Braaf.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Montipo; Magnani, Dawidowicz, Terracciano; Faraoni, Folorunsho, Duda, Lazovic, Doig; Bonazzoli, Duric

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Cabal (Injured), Braaf (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These are two sides that are expected to spend the majority of the campaign battling against relegation and that is indeed how they have started the campaign. Genoa’s underwhelming underperformance so far has only consisted of them scoring just 12 goals, too. They now face a Hellas Verona side that have scored just seven of their own as they sit in the bottom three. Regardless of the match result, a low-scoring encounter with under 2.5 goals is to be expected for this one.
