Giants vs Tigers Predictions, Picks, Odds: July 24

The Tigers opened as sizable underdogs for this Monday matinee with the struggling Giants, but one-sided action has seen Detroit do a complete reversal, as they're now significant favorites. Our MLB betting picks believe the money is smart.

The San Francisco Giants will make a quick layover at Comerica Park on Monday as they play a makeup game against the Detroit Tigers this afternoon.

The Giants (54-46) have lost five straight, but remain in contention for a Wild Card position in the NL playoff race. The Tigers (45-54) should be far from postseason contention, but still have an outside shot in the weak AL Central, where the Minnesota Twins are just seven games ahead of them.

The awkward timing of this game has made the starting pitching matchup unclear, particularly on San Francisco’s side. Still, it’s obvious which team has the advantage in today’s matchup. We’ll break that down in our free MLB picks and predictions for Giants vs. Tigers on July 24.

Giants vs Tigers predictions

At the moment, the Giants are still clinging to a Wild Card berth in the National League. However, their five-game losing streak — along with a similar four-game skid for the Arizona Diamondbacks — has brought teams like the Philadelphia Phillies and the Miami Marlins right back into the race.

Things are going so wrong for San Francisco right now that they just suffered a sweep at the hands of the lowly Washington Nationals. The Giants would normally have an off day today as they travel home to try and right the ship, but they are forced to stop in Detroit today to make up a postponed game from April.

For much of the leadup to this game, San Francisco hadn’t announced a probable starter. As of Monday morning, however, it seems that Ross Stripling will get the ball.

Stripling is coming off his longest outing of the year, finally getting into the sixth inning in his ninth start of the season. As that suggests, Stripling hasn’t found much success in 2023, as he has put up a 5.92 ERA in 51 2/3 innings split between the starting rotation and the bullpen.

The Tigers were more certain about their starter. Tarik Skubal will take the mound for Detroit, making his fourth start of the year after coming back from flexor tendon surgery. The 26-year-old lefty was excellent in his first two outings, but got roughed up against the Kansas City Royals in his last outing on July 18.

Skubal blamed fatigue for the poor performance. He’ll be put in a better position on Monday, when he takes on a tired, traveling Giants team that hasn’t hit well against lefthanded pitching in 2023. The Giants are hitting to just a .680 OPS against southpaws on the season, 55 points lower than against righthanded pitching.

Everything seems to be working against San Francisco here. The Giants are on the road for an awkwardly placed game in their schedule, are relying on a struggling pitcher, and are facing a hurler they’ll struggle to score runs against. All of this is happening on the back of a five-game losing streak as well.

The public instantly flipped the moneyline on this game, making the Tigers the favorite after Detroit opened as a dog. I’m betting more against the Giants than in favor of the Tigers, but either way, I’m picking Detroit on the run line to get maximum value on this makeup matchup.

My best bet: Tigers -1.5 (+150 at bet365)

Giants vs Tigers same-game parlay

Tigers -1.5

Over 8.5

Riley Greene 2+ total bases

Since we’re getting such good value on the Tigers to cover the run line, that seems like a great place to begin a same-game parlay bet on this afternoon’s contest. We’ll pair that with the Over, as while these are both light-hitting lineups, the Tigers should be able to get to Stripling, while the Giants will eventually get opportunities against the Detroit bullpen.

If I’m expecting the Tigers to score some runs, that likely means success for Riley Greene. The lefthanded outfielder has a good matchup against Stripling, and is riding a five-game hitting streak coming into today’s game. Let’s expect Greene to put up at least two total bases as we round out a potentially lucrative SGP this afternoon.

Giants vs Tigers moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Tigers opened the game as a +130 underdog, but that number flipped on its head as bettors got a clearer idea of the starting pitching matchup. Detroit is now a consensus -140 favorite in the MLB odds, while you can find +120 available on the Giants at many sites.

While these teams haven’t been world beaters, both have performed well for bettors this year. The Giants have made more than four units on the moneyline in 2023, while the Tigers have earned six units for backers this season.

Even with the line flipping, I’m leaning towards the Tigers in today’s game. Stripling has been entirely unreliable for San Francisco this season, while Skubal has been generally good since returning, outside of a single bad performance in his last start. Throw in all the other factors I mentioned above that make this an ugly spot for the Giants, and the Tigers are the pick here.

The total in today’s game opened at 8.5 runs, and that remains the consensus Over/Under as of early Monday. Right now, sites can’t agree on which side should be favored: You can get -105 on the Over or -104 on the Under by shopping around.

The Giants have generally played below the total this year, with the Under going 52-43 in San Francisco’s games this year. Despite the fact that Detroit is scoring a piddling 3.90 runs per game, the Over has still gone 50-43 when the Tigers play.

Neither team has a particularly strong lineup, yet sportsbooks are hesitant to push this total too low because of the shaky pitching matchup. I want to take advantage of those pitchers by predicting we go above the 8.5 run total. It’s not a strong lean, but with generous odds available if we shop around, I’m tentatively playing the Over here.

Starting pitchers

Ross Stripling (0-3, 5.92 ERA): Stripling has enjoyed success as a versatile swingman throughout much of his eight-year career, including going 10-4 with a 3.01 ERA last season with the Toronto Blue Jays. But the 33-year-old hasn’t been able to figure things out in San Francisco, and has gone 0-3 with a 5.45 ERA in nine appearances as a starter, going just 38 innings in those outings. His last outing was reasonable, however, allowing three runs on four hits over six innings against the Cincinnati Reds.

Tarik Skubal (0-1, 5.25 ERA): Skubal returned from injury on July 4 by tossing four hitless innings against the Oakland Athletics. He followed that up with four more scoreless frames against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 9. Those were encouraging performances, but the Royals did blast Skubal for seven runs in four innings on July 18 in his last outing, leading to questions over his durability and even some speculation that he might be tipping his pitches.
