Glorious Goodwood tips: Dave Nevison's best bets for Wednesday

Dave Nevison is sweet on a pair in the first two races plus has a strong fancy in the finale. Watch what happens live on Racing TV.

1.50 Goodwood: Fox Journey

Did me a favour at Newbury last time when a heavily backed 11/8 favourite. He is back up in grade on Wednesday afternoon but I think there is still improvement to come from him as he gains experience.

He certainly looked a potential star on his handicap debut at Newmarket in April and things didn’t go right for him at Epsom and Pontefract afterwards. He knuckled down well at Newbury, wide of his main rivals, and with Oisin Murphy taking over I expect another good run, hopefully at a much bigger price than last time.

2.25 Goodwood: Olivia Maralda

There is a degree of expectation about this filly because after taking up this entry her only future engagements are confined to the big Group One and Group Two events in the autumn.

She has improved since joining the Roger Varian team and didn’t run too badly in the 1000 Guineas on her English debut. She has since won a Listed race at Epsom but the real eye-catching run came in the Jersey, where she came from well off the pace to rattle home in fifth.

She is back against her own sex at Group Three level and represents a stable in terrific form. Provided the ground does not get desperate, I would be confident she will run well over 7f again.

5.20 Goodwood: Rhoscolyn

Hasn’t won for more than two years but he has a lot in his favour and rates a decent bet to end that barren run.

Rhoscolyn last won in June 2021 at Epsom off a mark of 92, where he was following up a course and distance win, on soft ground, off a mark of 86. He has subsequently run in many Group races and several of the big handicaps over this trip, performing with great credit for the most part.

His best performances have come at Goodwood and he ran second off 104 in the big mile handicap in 2021 and finished third in a finish of noses off the same mark in August of last year.

It has seemed to take him a while to hit form after wind surgery this season, although the stable generally had a bit of a lull in late spring but is back to form now.

He signalled his turn for a long overdue win was coming with a good second at Beverley last time and would likely have done better if the hood had come off a bit quicker. He is well drawn in 4 and has conditions to suit on his favourite track with Oisin Murphy doing the steering.
