Glorious Goodwood Tips on August 4th

The King George Qatar Stakes headlines another excellent card on day four of Glorious Goodwood, where two further pattern races and the lucrative Golden Mile Handicap will also take place.

Here are our free tips through the card on day four of Glorious Goodwood.

Glorious Goodwood Day Four Tips

Race 1 - Goodwood Handicap Tips

Soft ground form may not be a necessity on Friday - if the Met Office is to be believed - but this 24-and-a-half-furlong trip is still going to require some getting. Calling The Wind, being a former winner of this contest, clearly has a very strong chance on the back of his Northumberland Plate success. However, all of the last ten winners of this handicap have carried 9-01 or less, so the top-weight may have his work cut out.

I'm again going to side with the Quickthorn combo of Tom Marquand and Hughie Morrison and hope that the return to Goodwood sparks a revival from VINO VICTRIX (20/1). Morrison's five-year-old hacked up over two miles here last summer, before finishing second in the Cesarewitch off 92. Vino Victrix has droppped back down to that mark after three fairly poor efforts this term and could be worth siding with a lengthy odds.

Race 2 - Thoroughbred Stakes Tips

If the ground at Goodwood doesn't dry out by the time this Group Three rolls around, it's highly likely that odds-on favourite Nostrum won't take his chance, opening the door for the hugely progressive DOCKLANDS (9/2) to claim his fourth win on the bounce.

Since finishing second to the classy Cicero's Gift at Wolverhampton in March, Docklands has won a maiden at Kempton, a handicap at Ascot and the Britannia Stakes at the Royal Meeting. Harry Eustace's rising star has won on both soft and fast ground at Ascot this season and his progression shows no signs of slowing down. I'll be backing Docklands in the "without the favourite" market, or straight win if Nostrum doesn't run.

Race 3 - Golden Mile Tips

Eight of the last ten winners of the Golden Mile were drawn between stalls two and five, with 80% of the top five placers coming out of stall 11 or lower. This low-draw bias is so pronounced that punters pile on favourably drawn runners, which has caused seven of the last ten winners to go off at single-figure prices.

LATTAM (4/1) already topped the ante-post market for this handicap, having shown some excellent form so far this season. William Haggas' four-year-old stormed home to win the Irish Lincoln on his reappearance, before following up with a narrow victory up at Newcastle at the end of June.

Tom Marquand will have been delighted to see the favourite drawn perfectly in stall three when the gates were allotted on Wednesday. If Lattam goes off at a price longer than 4/1, I'll be very surprised.

One who holds plenty of each-way appeal is the consistent OUZO (16/1). Jamie Osbourne's seven-year-old hasn't won since October 2020, but Ouzo has only finished outside the places twice in his 11 starts for this stable. Saffie Osbourne's mount finished fourth in this race off the same mark 12 months ago and ran a cracker behind Perotto at Sandown last time out. From a kind draw in stall nine, he's certainly capable of contending.

Race 5 - Glorious Stakes Tips

On ratings, this Group Three is Hamish's to lose. That being said, William Haggas' seven-year-old was fairly workmanlike when seeing off lesser rivals at York last time out and drying ground will not suit the favourite.

I'm quite keen to back MIMIKYU (11/2), who produced the finest performance of her career when running away with the Park Hill Stakes on soft ground at Doncaster last September. Frankie Dettori's mount will wear cheek-pieces for the first time on Friday, which seems like a sensible move considering Mimikyu hung right in the Bronte Cup and left when third in the Lancashire Oaks. She could take advantage if Hamish underperforms.

Race 6 - Nursery Handicap Tips

With Richard Hannon's horses going so well this week, a chance can be taken on DAPPER VALLEY (16/1) as he drops into handicap company for the first time.

An impressive debut winner on soft ground at Newbury, Dapper Valley has struggled in Listed company on his two subsequent starts. This son of Dandy Man clearly has plenty of ability and I wouldn't be surprised if his class shone through in these calmer waters.

Race 7 - Coral Handicap Tips

We've seen some progressive sorts win this handicap down the years and one who certainly fits that profile this year is Churchill gelding, MASO BASTIE (6/1).

James Fanshawe's rising star made a winning turf debut at Nottingham in May, beating the now 93-rated Tempered Soul, who was getting nine pounds from the winner. Maso Bastie could only finish third at Newcastle on his handicap debut, where the top-weight got outpaced turning for home before staying on in the closing stages. Switching back to softer turf should suit and this strapping gelding still has plenty of improvement left in his locker.
