As one of the favorites to win the 2023-24 CONCACAF Nations League, Mexico begin their campaign with a visit to Honduras in the first leg of the quarterfinals. The winner of each quarterfinal series will automatically earn a spot in the 2024 Copa America next summer, so there’s plenty to play for beyond just a berth in the Nations League Finals next March.
El Tri are still searching for their first Nations League title as the Americans won the first two iterations of the new tournament. However, they come into this match in shaky form after drawing three of their last four international friendlies with their only win coming in the form of a 2-0 victory over Ghana last month. In their most recent matchup they were able to hold Germany to a 2-2- draw, thanks to goals from Uriel Antuna and Erick Sanchez on either side of the halftime break.
Honduras are playing in the Nations League knockouts for the first time as they look to continue the positive momentum they found in the group stage. They’re coming off a 4-0 win over Cuba, which was preceded by a scoreless draw against the same side. Their second match of the group stage also ended in a 4-0 win as they took down Grenada comfortably. However, they’ll have their work cut out for them against one of the best teams in the region as they haven’t been able to log a win over Mexico since 2017.
I think El Tri won’t have too much trouble getting the job done even on the road as they’ll look to get one foot in the door before hosting the return leg on November 21. Take Mexico to get the win.
