How Premier League looks at World Cup break

The World Cup starts on Sunday, 20 November and ends on 18 December. The Premier League does not return until 26 December, so this weekend's action is over.

Arsenal are five points clear at the top of the table. Newcastle are third, seven points behind Arsenal. Alan Shearer believes Newcastle will not win the title this season. Chelsea have not won in five Premier League games and are eighth. Manchester United are fifth, with Liverpool sixth on 22 points. Tottenham are one point behind Newcastle. Manchester City are seventh, one place above Newcastle in eighth place. Liverpool are sixth, while Chelsea are in 8th place with 17 points from 14 games. They have scored less goals than any other team in the Premier league. The team that topped the league on Christmas Day has been champions in 10 of last 13 seasons.

There are six points between Fulham in ninth and Nottingham Forest in 18th.

Wolves are bottom of the Premier League table. Leicester City were the last team to avoid relegation from that position in 2014-15.

Julen Lopetegui takes over as manager of Wolves on Monday. Nathan Jones takes charge of Southampton's final game before the break. Everton have lost their last three games and are one point above the relegation zone. David Moyes is under pressure at West Ham. Mark Schwarzer expects the Premier League to be different on Boxing Day.  

Manchester City have the most players going to the World Cup with 16. Manchester United will have 15 players, Chelsea 12, Tottenham 11, Arsenal 10, Newcastle 5 and Liverpool 7. Southampton have fewest players and Bournemouth 3. Egypt did not qualify for the tournament. The top scorer Erling Haaland is not going.

The Carabao Cup fourth round takes place on the week of 19 December. Manchester City will host Liverpool on Thursday, 22 December, while Wolves, Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Manchester United, Leicester and Brighton are also in action in that round.
