After having a goal waved off in overtime, Bryan Rust quickly made sure it didn’t happen twice. His wraparound goal with 1:15 remaining on the clock in overtime gave the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings, giving them a sweep of their California road trip for the first time since 1996-97. Rust appeared to put in his own rebound 19 seconds earlier, but the goal was waved off when he was ruled offside. Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist as he became the 11th player in NHL history with 450 career multi-point games. He also extended his point streak to seven games.

Bryce Young repeatedly said he needed to play better. Carolina coach Frank Reich said he needed to do a better job. It was the same message from Chuba Hubbard and Terrace Marshall. Following another anemic offensive performance, it’s clear the Panthers know their offense isn’t playing well enough to win. But still, nothing has changed. Carolina was shut down by Chicago in a 16-13 loss, finishing with a season-low 213 yards and 12 first downs. The Panthers went 3 for 15 on third down and failed to score an offensive touchdown for the second time in the first nine games this season.

Keion Brooks Jr. scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Washington to a 75-67 win over Northern Kentucky. Brooks had 19 in the second half on 6-of-8 shooting and a perfect 7 of 7 from the foul line, coming up with key baskets every time the Norse threatened. Sam Vinson and Keeyan Itejere both had 14 for the Norse. There were five ties and five lead changes before a 9-0 run that wiped out a six-point deficit that put the Huskies up for good. Brooks capped the surge with a jumper that made it 29-26. Brooks 13 and the Huskies led 41-35 at the half.

Asian shares have retreated after rising bond market yields once again weighed on Wall Street. The declines ended a lull in wider swings in prices during a brief respite from market moving data releases. U.S. futures and oil prices were higher. On Thursday, the S&P 500 was poised to claim its longest winning streak in 19 years but sagged as bond yields rose after Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the U.S. central bank would not hesitate to raise rates if inflation is not fully controlled. The S&P 500 sank 0.8%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.6% and the Nasdaq composite lost 0.9%.

SAN JOSE, Calif.– So much went wrong for the San Jose Sharks over the first three-plus weeks of the regular season that perhaps it was about time that they caught a lucky bounce.

The top diplomats and defense chiefs of India and the United States met in New Delhi focusing on security issues in the Indo-Pacific, China and the Israel-Hamas war. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. and India have a strong partnership and would discuss matters with implications for the future. He said the U.S. and India are promoting a free and open and prosperous Asia-Pacific, including by strengthening the Quad partnership with Japan and Australia. India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar earlier said the situation in the Middle East was a big concern.

Foreman runs for TD, Bears beat Panthers 16-13 to boost their shot at the top pick in the draft

Isaac Guerendo rushed for a 73-yard, go-ahead touchdown with 3:24 remaining and No. 11 Louisville rallied with 17 points in the fourth quarter to beat Virginia 31-24 on Thursday night. Overshadowing the tight outcome was a serious injury sustained by Virginia tailback Perris Jones late in the third quarter. Jones caught a 7-yard pass and fumbled after being hit on his helmet by Cardinals safety Cam’Ron Kelly and several other Cardinals. Malik Washington scooped up the ball near the right sideline and dashed downfield for the 42-yard go-ahead touchdown to make 21-14 after trailing 14-0 at halftime. When play resumed the Cardinals rallied to tie the game at 24 and go ahead on Guerendo's latest big run.

Tomas Hertl scored one goal and set up another to help the San Jose Sharks win their second straight game following 11 consecutive losses to open the season, 3-2 over the slumping Edmonton Oilers. In a matchup of the NHL’s two worst teams so far this season, it was Connor McDavid and the Oilers who ended up on the losing end. Hertl assisted on Fabian Zetterlund’s goal that opened the scoring in the first period and then took advantage of a fortunate bounce to score midway through the second period. Mackenzie Blackwood made 39 saves for San Jose.

Aidan Mahaney matched his career high of 25 points and made five 3-pointers, and No. 23 Saint Mary’s avenged last season’s home loss to New Mexico with a 72-58 win over the Lobos. The Gaels dominated at both ends of the court Thursday and led by 22 before coasting over the final eight minutes to win. Harry Wessels added 12 points, the only other Saint Mary’s player to score in double figures. The win took a little sting out of the Gaels’ 69-65 loss to the Lobos a year ago, a victory that snapped Saint Mary’s school-record, 23-game winning streak at home.

D’Onta Foreman ran for a touchdown and the Chicago Bears boosted their shot at the top pick in the draft, beating the Carolina Panthers 16-13 on Thursday night. The Bears (3-7) also boosted their chances at the No. 1 pick because they have Carolina’s first-rounder in 2024. They acquired the pick along with Moore last March for the top selection this year. The Panthers (1-8) are tied with Arizona — which plays Atlanta on Sunday — for the worst record in the NFL. Foreman gave the Bears a 16-10 lead in the third quarter with a 4-yard run. Chicago was clinging to a three-point lead with 1:40 remaining when Carolina’s Eddy Pineiro attempted a 59-yard field goal. The ball landed well short.

Hollywood’s months of labor unrest are coming to an end, but the post-strike landscape that awaits actors and writers may be far from happy-ever-after. As actors swap their picket signs for audition sides and calls sheets, they’ll be returning to an industry still in the midst of painful transformation and streaming upheaval. Even before the strike, every studio was reexamining its streaming strategy. After several years of rampant green lights, most are pulling back, looking to make fewer series and movies, cutting staff and seeking a path toward profitability

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo scored an NBA season-high 54 points, but committed two turnovers after Tyrese Haliburton’s go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:29 left and the Indiana Pacers beat the Milwaukee Bucks 126-124 on Thursday night.

Charlisse Leger-Walker scored 26 points, including the go-ahead basket in overtime, and No. 24 Washington State turned back Gonzaga 77-72. The Cougars made 4 of 6 shots with a 3-pointer and free throw in the extra period while Gonzaga was limited to Kaylynne Truong’s free throws and 3. The Bulldogs  were 1 of 7. Truong, who had 22 points, hit a 25-foot at the buzzer to force overtime. WSU opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run for the biggest lead of the game, 53-43. Kaylynne Truong and her twin sister combined for six-straight points for a 62-61 Gonzaga lead with less than 30 seconds to go. Leger-Walker scored the last six points for WSU, with her free throws with six seconds to go making it 67-64.

Led by Jorell Saterfield's 14 points, the Portland State Vikings defeated the UCSB Gauchos 82-76.

Patrick Parker Walsh is one of thousands of thieves who perpetrated the greatest grift in U.S. history — potentially plundering more than $280 billion in federal COVID-19 aid. Walsh is currently serving five and half years in federal prison for stealing nearly $8 million in COVID-19 relief funds that he used, in part, to buy a Florida island. While Walsh’s private island ranks among the most unusual purchases by pandemic aid fraudsters, his crime was not unique. The scammers who defrauded the government spent lavishly on houses, luxury watches, diamond jewelry, strip clubs and gambling sprees. Authorities vow to track down the fraudsters. Nearly 3,200 defendants have been charged with COVID-19 relief fraud, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

Democratic operatives believe that Joe Manchin’s decision not to seek reelection virtually ensures the party will lose his Senate seat next year in deep-red West Virginia. At the same time, some Democratic officials are concerned that Manchin’s announcement frees him to pursue a third-party presidential bid. Some think Manchin might ultimately undermine President Joe Biden’s reelection. Overall, his announcement injects a new layer of uncertainty for Democratic leaders already anxious about the party’s prospects in 2024. Biden is seeking a second term despite persistent concerns about his age and economic leadership. And Democrats are clinging to a one-seat majority in the Senate.

Jewish refugees from the war between Israel and Hamas are finding safety in an unused lakeside resort in the Hungarian countryside. Many of them had earlier fled conflict in Ukraine when Russia invaded in 2022. The camp currently houses around 250 people including 100 children, and provides kosher food, shelter and camaraderie for the refugees. When Hamas launched its attack on Israel, the camp was already in operation and ready to accept those fleeing the new conflict. While the residents of the camp have found comfort in their common experience of having to leave their homes, they still do not know when they’ll be able to return.
