Kentucky Derby 2022: Meet the trainers, see their records

Todd Pletcher and Doug O'Neill have two Kentucky Derby victories each. Brad Cox got one, but he didn't get to celebrate in the winner's circle. Tim Yakteen is the most prominent trainer with five horses in contention for the Derby. Steve Asmussen has no Derby wins. He has a record of 0-for-37 in Kentucky Derbies.

Steve Asmussen's best chance was with Curlin, who won the 2007 Preakness after finishing third in the Derby. Nehro in 2011 and Lookin At Lee each lost by 2 3/4 lengths.

Chad Brown has won four Eclipse Awards as North America's top trainer. He has had only six previous Derby starters, all of whom were at least 9-1 long shots. His best finish came four years ago with Good Magic, who ended up being a two-time Grade 1 winner.

Ricky Courville's Un Ojo is the unlikeliest starter in the field. Courille has 194 wins from 1,673 starts for $5,291,398 in purse earnings. Brad Cox's Derby starters include Cyberknife, Tawny Port and Zozos. Cox is a Louisville native and has two Eclipse Awards.

White Abarrio won the Florida Derby. He will bring Joseph to the Kentucky Derby for the second time.

Kenny McPeek has not trained a horse in the Derby for nine years. It has been 20 years since he had the favorite. Harlan's Holiday is the longest price on a Derby favorite since pari-mutuel betting was established at Churchill Downs in 1908.

Doug O'Neill won the Kentucky Derby twice in the 2010s. O’Neill also won it in 2012 with I'll Have Another and in 2016 with Nyquist. Hot Rod Charlie was promoted from third last year to second. Slow Down Andy was ruled out last week after he spiked a fever.

Johnny Ortiz had a pair of Grade 3 winners at Churchill Downs in 2019. Barber Road is a four-time stakes runner-up. Ortiz is the son of an accomplished jockey in Colombia.

Todd Pletcher has started more Derby horses than anyone else. He has a 3.4 percent success rate in the race. Always Dreaming won in 2017. P Fletcher got his first Derby score with Super Saver in 2010.

Simplification is a Derby starter. He won the Fountain of Youth in 2007.

Bhupat Seemar took over the Meydan stable after Satish Seemsar was suspended. Bhupa's uncle Satis suspended over his association with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. He got to his first Kentucky Derby with Summer Is Tomorrow, the runner-up in UAE Derby (G2).

Koichi Shintani is a trainer of Crown Pride. Crown pride won the UAE Derby last month.

Tim Yakteen has been a trainer for 31 years and has four Grade 1 wins. His best horse was Mucho Unusual, a 5-year-old turf mare who won the 2020 RodeoDrive at Santa Anita.

Kelly Breen's horse In Due Time missed a chance to make the Derby with a win last week in theLexington (G3) at Keeneland. Brenne hasn't had a runner for the roses since 2011, when Pants OnFire finished ninth.

Wayne Lukas has not had a starter in the Derby since Bravazo finished sixth in 2018. Eric Reed's biggest claim to fame was when Rinterval came within a neck of beating Zenyatta in 2010 Clement L. Hirsch (G1) at Del Mar.
