It was only Rich Strike's second win in eight starts and first since he won his maiden at the Churchill Downs in September last year. The winner only got into the race on Friday following the withdrawal of Ethereal Road. Eric Reed, the trainer, fell down the paddock when Rich strike hit the wire.

Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby. The first place finish earned him $1.86 million.
