Kim Ng Suddenly Becomes Potential Red Sox GM Candidate

It's been over a month since Chaim Bloom got the heave-ho, and the Red Sox are still searching for his replacement. A number of their top candidates have already rejected them, probably because ownership has fired two presidents of baseball operations in the last four years.

With Boston's list of options dwindling, a new name has suddenly emerged in the team's search for a new general manager.

Miami Marlins Kim Ng declined her mutual option with the club on Monday, essentially becoming a free agent. This comes as a bit of a surprise after the Marlins made the playoffs in 2023 and finished with their most regular-season wins (84) since 2009.

Ng, who was the first female GM in MLB history, served in the role for three seasons from 2021-2023. She oversaw a quick turnaround during that time, helping Miami improve from 67 wins in 2021 to 69 wins in 2022 to 84 wins in 2023.

Now that she has proven herself in the role, Ng is likely looking for a leadership position in a bigger market with more financial resources. The Marlins are known for their poor attendance and low payrolls, finishing 24th in Opening Day salaries and 29th in attendance in 2023, which makes a difficult job even more challenging.

The Red Sox, however, are much more attractive from that perspective. They typically rank near the top of the league in both attendance and payroll, and ownership will likely be willing to spend this offseason following back-to-back last-place finishes. If Ng could build a contender on a shoestring budget in Florida, imagine what she could do with a payroll twice the size.

Ng will likely be in high demand, but expect Boston to push hard for her. Philadelphia Phillies GM Sam Fuld was believed to be the Red Sox's first choice, but that may change now that Ng is available.
