Liverpool vs Aston Villa predictions

What a difference a comeback win can make.

A goal and a man down, Liverpool looked to be headed to a defeat by Newcastle United at half-time of their clash at St James’ Park last weekend.

A loss would not have been overly damaging to their overall prospects this season, but it would inevitably have fuelled talk that Liverpool are not equipped to challenge for the Premier League title.

Whether or not they are able to mount a title tilt remains to be seen. But the manner of their most recent victory, secured thanks to two late Darwin Nunez goals, has at least lifted the mood around Anfield.

A return of seven points from a possible nine represents a solid start to the season from Jurgen Klopp’s team, especially as they have already faced Chelsea and Newcastle away from home.

There are still question marks over this team, namely in midfield and at the back.

New signing Wataru Endo is a more natural holding player than Alexis Mac Allister, but is he good enough to get Liverpool back to where they want to be?

Similar concerns exist around the backline. Virgil van Dijk was sent off against Newcastle - and that was not the first time he has been exposed in the last 12 months.

Van Dijk lacks a top-class centre-back partner, Trent Alexander-Arnold is still liable to switch off defensively and Andy Robertson does not look like usual self.

It is not all doom and gloom, though, and another victory here would leave Liverpool fans quietly optimistic for what lies ahead.

📝 Liverpool vs Aston Villa betting tips

This promises to be an enthralling encounter between two teams that will be going for the win.

Liverpool to win - 4/6 (bet365)

Unai Emery has not even been in charge of Aston Villa for a year yet but he has already achieved plenty during his time at the helm.

Emery inherited a team that was only outside the relegation zone on goal difference and dragged them all the way up to seventh.

Had the season begun upon his appointment, Villa would have finished fifth and only just missed out on the Champions League.

As it is they will compete in the Europa Conference League this term, a tournament they will fancy their chances in given Emery’s terrific track record in continental competition.

Villa have registered comfortable victories over Everton (4-0) and Burnley (3-1) in their last two outings. Yet despite that, their goal difference is only +2.

That is because they were demolished 5-1 by Newcastle on the opening weekend. The Magpies continually exploited Villa’s high defensive line, and Liverpool will look to do similar here.

If Villa do not get their timing right when it comes to closing down the man in possession, Liverpool’s forwards should have plenty of joy running in behind.

In addition, Villa are yet to beat a member of last season’s top five under Emery on the road.

Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score - 8/11 (bet365)

Liverpool look particularly well positioned to exploit any defensive line problems from Aston Villa.

We saw an example of their attacking quality last weekend. Nunez, who has barely been used so far this season, was the match-winner with two brilliantly taken goals.

With Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz also around, Klopp’s squad does not lack talent at the top of the pitch.

Villa have also shown that they know where the goal is this season. Only Brighton & Hove Albion have put the ball in the back of the net more often after three rounds of fixtures.

Moussa Diaby already looks like a tremendous signing in support of Ollie Watkins, who scored a career-high 16 Premier League goals last term.

Villa also pack a punch in attack and they will be happy to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool at Anfield.

It is a high-risk, high-rewards strategy but one which Emery will not deviate from, as we saw in the heavy loss to Newcastle.

All of which points to this being a high-scoring encounter.

Darwin Nunez to score any time - 7/5 (bet365)

It is fair to say that Nunez’s debut season in the Premier League did not exactly go to plan.

The Uruguay international did not get into double figures for goals and by the end of the campaign he was struggling to get into the starting XI.

He has only played 41 out of a possible 270 minutes so far in 2023/24, but his brace last weekend will probably earn him a spot in Klopp’s line-up here.

Nunez is a confidence player and his game-winning contributions at St James’ Park will have given him a huge left.

It is not just that the striker scored twice, but both goals were excellent finishes against one of the best shot-stoppers in the division in Nick Pope.

Even if Nunez does not start, Klopp is likely to turn to him early if Liverpool need a goal. We fancy the former Benfica frontman to find the net again this weekend.
