Blues can clip Klopp’s title tilt

Liverpool are on course to lift the Premier League title and give Jurgen Klopp the perfect send-off when he leaves the club at the end of the season.

The German steered the Reds to their 19th league title in 2020 but Covid restrictions meant that they were presented with the trophy at an empty Anfield.

They are two points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who have played a game more, and five ahead of Manchester City, who will still have a game in hand after they face Burnley tonight. Aston Villa are level on points with City but Tuesday’s home defeat by Newcastle United has dented their hopes.

Liverpool have lost just one domestic match this season and their record at Anfield is remarkable, with 15 wins and two draws from 17 home games in all competitions.

Two statistics perfectly illustrate Chelsea’s inconsistency: they have won seven of their previous 10 matches in all competitions (one on penalties) but have also lost five of the last six on the road.

But they have won away to Tottenham Hotspur and are only four points off the top six after a poor start to the season, with an EFL Cup final against Liverpool to look forward to next month.

More pertinently, perhaps, the past seven meetings between the sides have all finished level after 90 or 120 minutes, so we’re backing Chelsea to earn a valuable point this evening.

Liverpool vs Chelsea tip 1: Draw @ 10/3 with Paddy Power

History points to cagey clash

There has been nothing to separate the sides over the past two and a half seasons save two penalty shoot-out wins for Liverpool in the 2022 League Cup and FA Cup finals.

More remarkably, perhaps, the previous five meetings have produced a total of just two goals, the 1-1 draw on the opening weekend of the season breaking a sequence of four goalless draws.

Another cagey encounter can be expected on Wednesday, particularly given the calibre of the absentees, most notably Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, respectively chief finisher and chief creator for the home side.

Chelsea will be missing their own attacking threats in the form of Nicolas Jackson and Reece James, so it is unlikely that we will see the net bulge too often in this meeting.

Liverpool vs Chelsea tip 2: Under 2.5 goals @ 7/4 with Paddy Power

Nunez and Palmer to call the shots

With Salah absent, Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez looks the best bet to fill the Egyptian’s shoes. No player has registered more shots on target for the Reds this term than the 24-year-old, so we’re backing him to have two or more in that category as the first part of our bet builder.

Chelsea will look to summer signing and top scorer Cole Palmer for their goal threat. He has netted nine goals from his 14 on-target efforts this term so expect him to test Alisson in the Liverpool goal.

There may also be a bit of work for the officials in what is so often a closely contested affair, and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher is no stranger to a stern word in the ear from the referee.

No Chelsea player has committed more fouls this season than Gallagher’s 47 – an average of 2.35 per game. It would be no surprise to see him mistime another challenge at Anfield.

Liverpool vs Chelsea tip 3: Darwin Nunez 2+ shots on target, Cole Palmer 1+ shots on target, Conor Gallagher 1+ fouls committed @ 2.63/1 with Paddy Power
