LSU vs. FSU point spread, betting line

LSU fans have waited for this year’s season opener to get a little revenge. That wait ends Sunday when the No. 5-ranked Tigers face off against No. 8 Florida State for only the second time in over 30 years.

That first matchup took place in New Orleans last year on the day before Labor Day. It ended on a failed extra point attempt by LSU kicker Damian Ramos that gave the ‘Noles the 24-23 victory. This one goes down in Orlando at 6:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 3.

On Tuesday afternoon, the point spread favored LSU at -2.5, via SportsLine, and the over/under sat at 56.5 points.

The Tigers are just 2-8 all-time against the Seminoles with a victory in the 1968 Peach Bowl (31-27). The next one came in 1982 (55-21) in Tiger Stadium on a night the crowd showered the field with oranges in a thick fog. Florida State, however, has won the last five in the series dating back to a 40-35 win in Tiger Stadium in ‘83.

It’s the second meeting between the two proud programs since 1991 when the then-No. 1 Seminoles posted a 27-16 win in Tiger Stadium. The previous year, the two teams got into a brawl in the final minutes of a 42-3 FSU victory in Tallahassee after a late hit out of bounds on the Seminoles. That ending had administrators on both sides not wanting to extend the series for several years.

The two programs enjoyed plenty of success during their hiatus, combining to win six national titles (LSU – 2003, 2007, 2019; Florida State – 1993, 1999, 2013).

In season openers, LSU is 92-32-5 and has won 22 of its past 27 openers but lost the last three. The other four losses were at Virginia Tech (2002), against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field (2016), in Tiger Stadium against Mississippi State (2020), and at UCLA (2021). Brian Kelly sports a 13-6 mark in season openers, including previous stops at Central Michigan, Cincinnati and Notre Dame.

This marks just the sixth Sunday game in LSU history. The Tigers are 3-2 in previous Sunday contests dating back to the program’s first against Notre Dame on Dec. 28, 1997, a 27-9 win in the Independence Bowl. The lone loss came to No. 16 Virginia Tech, 26-8, on Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg to open the 2002 season.

ABC will broadcast the action with Chris Fowler on play-by-play, Kirk Herbstreit as the color analyst, and Holly Rowe as the sideline reporter. The game will be streamed at Watch ESPN.com and on the Watch ESPN app.

For those not able to watch or stream the game, they can listen to the LSU Sports Radio Network broadcast for free on the LSU Sports Mobile App, on a computer at LSUsports.net/live, on the flagship radio station Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge, and on all radio network affiliates. The Voice of the Tigers, Chris Blair, and Doug Moreau will be on the call, along with Gordy Rush on the sideline.
