Manchester City vs Newcastle United predictions

Manchester City have another trophy in the bag.

Their fourth piece of silverware of 2023 was secured on Wednesday night, as Pep Guardiola’s side saw off Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup in Greece.

They were made to work hard for their victory. A 1-1 draw after extra time led to a penalty shoot-out, which City won 5-4 after Nemanja Gudelj missed the 10th kick of the shoot-out.

But Sevilla took the lead in regulation time and had several chances to go 2-0 up. Had they been more prolific in and around the penalty area, City might have been out of the game.

Still, the Super Cup is not among Guardiola’s top priorities and he will be pleased that City found a way to win.

A 3-0 victory over Burnley last Friday represented a positive start to the defence of their Premier League crown.

City did not really get out of second gear at Turf Moor, yet they still triumphed by a comfortable margin.

This game at the Etihad Stadium will be a much tougher test, however. Newcastle finished fourth last term and the early signs are that they are ready to kick on in 2023/24.

That is why this match will be an intriguing spectacle. Which of Manchester City or Newcastle United will make a major statement in the late kick-off on Saturday?

Manchester City vs Newcastle United betting tips

Newcastle United have the potential to cause Manchester City some problems here, but the champions should still prove too strong.

Manchester City to win - 4/6 (bet365)

Manchester City won this fixture 2-0 last term, but it was a closer match than the scoreline suggests.

Newcastle, who were coming off the back of a defeat by Manchester United in the EFL Cup final, had plenty of bright moments at the Etihad.

They recovered to win eight of their next nine games, a spell which went a long way to securing a Champions League qualification spot.

Newcastle have improved since that contest in early March. Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and   Harvey Barnes have been added to the squad, which now has more depth than it did last time out.

Eddie Howe’s team were hugely impressive in gameweek one. They blew Aston Villa away at St James’ Park, emerging as 5-1 victors in front of their jubilant supporters.

Newcastle played with energy and intensity. The question now is whether they will be able to do so to the same extent away from home against City.

Indeed, Guardiola’s side will control the tempo of this game. Newcastle will try to press when they can, but they will not get in behind City’s backline as easily and as often as they did Villa’s.

Newcastle will certainly have their moments, but the champions should have just a little bit too much for them in this one.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals - 11/10 (bet365)

Manchester City have a formidable scoring record on home turf. They have not failed to score in a Premier League game at the Etihad since September 2021, when Southampton upset the odds to draw 0-0.

City played 30 home matches in all competitions last season. They scored 100 goals - more than three per game on average.

That is a phenomenal record and one which underlines the difficulty of the task in front of sides that visit the Etihad.

Keeping City out will be very hard, then. But there is reason to believe Newcastle can give them something to think about going the other way.

The Magpies looked irresistible in attack last time out. Granted, they were aided by Aston Villa’s recklessly high defensive line, which they did not combine with the requisite pressure on the ball higher up the pitch.

But City looked vulnerable against Sevilla, who created several good opportunities in the Super Cup.

Newcastle will have to give up the ball more than usual, but their speed and direct running in transition means they should still be able to cause City problems.

Manchester City to win from behind - 6/1 (bet365)

This is something of a long shot but it could be worth a punt for reasons we will explain.

City have had a busy week. The Super Cup lasted for 120 minutes plus the penalty shoot-out. The team only travelled back to Manchester on Thursday, and Athens is not merely a short flight away.

Newcastle, by contrast, have had a full week to prepare for this fixture. They should look fresher and sharper in the early stages.

Howe may judge that his team’s best chance of landing a blow on City is early on, before they have settled into their rhythm.

But even if they were to fall behind, it would not be at all surprising if Guardiola’s men emerged triumphant anyway.

City are very tough to beat at the Etihad and conceding the first goal would not be fatal to their chances of victory.
