If he can repeat that feat in today, he will successfully stand in the way of history once again, while claiming his second Grand Slam title.

In 2021, Djokovic was a win away from a calendar-year Grand Slam, and he was favored to down Medvedev in the US Open final and seal the deal.

Instead, Medvedev stunned Djokovic in straight sets to make his Grand Slam breakthrough and keep Rod Laver as the only man to capture a calendar-year Grand Slam in tennis’s modern era.

This time around, Djokovic isn’t chasing a calendar-year Grand Slam, but he is looking to tie Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam singles titles by a man or woman.

As was the case two years ago, Djokovic is a firm favorite. But Medvedev is coming off of a huge win over world number one Carlos Alcaraz, and he has beaten Djokovic enough to know that victory is well within his reach.

After his 2021 US Open win, Medvedev reached the final of the next Grand Slam, suffering an agonizing loss to Rafael Nadal in the 2022 Australian Open after winning the first two sets.

Then he failed to make it past the fourth round in his next four Grand Slam appearances, and just as soon as it appeared that he would become the next mainstay at the top of men’s singles, along came Carlos Alcaraz to cement himself as both the present and future.

But after a run to the Wimbledon semifinals–the first time he advanced beyond the fourth round there–Medvedev is now back in a Grand Slam final.

Does he feed off of the pain and anguish of his enemies? All legendary winners aren’t the same, but Djokovic is in the group that feeds off of making the opposition suffer but also thrives when having his own powers tested or questioned.
